new super red hawk in 44......
« on: September 12, 2005, 01:30:37 PM »
Ok..after a long time (years) thinking about it, I did it.
got a 44 for deer hunting (SE Ohio).
any thoughts or suggestions???

its a Ruger Super Red Hawk, 44 Mag, stainless, with a 9.5" barrel.
It is set up to accept a 1" scope.
I am leaning toward the open sights though, as I dont expect to go past 50 yards.

Any thoughts on ammo (not a reloader yet)?
Any thoughts on the longer barrel?
thanks!

Congrats on the new pistol.  Excellent handgun.
The 9.5" barrel will give you a longer sight radius and more forward weight which will help in muzzle lift.
Ammo choice should be dependent on hunting area.  Is the 50 yard limit self imposed or terrain imposed?  If terrain, then I would go with a hard cast heavier slug.  Federal makes an excellent hunting round in hard cast.  Cor-bon and others also offer excellent ammo.  Find something that shoots good in your pistol.
Good luck and enjoy your new gun.

Good for you, you are going to enjoy hunting with it. I have one in 44 magnum and found the Federal American Eagle brand ammunition loaded with 240 Grain JHP shot outstanding through it. So well infact That I chose not to reload for it.

Mine is also equipped with an AIMPOINT Red Dot sight. This gives me vary fast target/sight and I find the low light benefit helpful.

Practice shooting it in double action. You will be glad you did, on the cold days when you are wearing gloves. Practice shooting is a must, but in a couple of boxs you will have it down.

Let us know how you make out, East river Deer season won't open until  the end of November for us.   Let the fun begin!

I like a red-dot for close up hand gunning. It give's a quick target acquisition. IMO  I like the shorter barrel myself 7 1/2, but I am sure you will make out just fine with the long barrel. As for ammo, I am a reloader, but if I had to choose a factory round I would go with a quality bullet in the 240 gr. weight.  :D
