Hornady Light Magnum
« on: July 20, 2005, 01:45:53 PM »
I picked up a box of Hornady Light Magnum .308 ammo in a trade, and I noticed the ballistic info printed on the side of the box.  It listed the 150gr SST bullet at 3000 fps, which I thought was a bit optimistic.  Well, I actually got to chrono some of the ammo yesterday out of my 22" Handi.

The first thing I noticed when I pulled the trigger was the recoil.  This load really kicks like a mule.  It was a lot worse than any 150-180gr Remington load I tried!  When I looked at the chronograph, it was showing readings of 2963, 2955, and 2928.  WOW!  That's really impressive for a .308 in a 22" barrel.

I did notice some flattened primers, and two were slightly cratered.  This surprises me in a factory load, but not necessarily a 150gr .308 at almost 3000fps.

Anyone else tried the ammo?

I tried some 165 Hornady Light Magnum's in my 24" barrel 30 06 and they came up almost 100'fps.shy of the 3015 fps on the box. I can get that with IMR 4350 so I hav'nt shot the rest of them.  Digger
