Proper trot line knots
« on: July 23, 2005, 07:29:30 AM »
My grandfather taught me to trot line as a boy.  I really enjoyed but haven't done it an probably 20 years.  He passed last fall and now I kind of have the hankering to get back out and run a line for a night or two, more for his memory than anything else.

The knot he used, I remember it had 2 wraps on one side of the drop line and only 1 on the other side.  It allowed the drop line to spin around the main line without wrapping and also, if a large enough fish got on, it would allow some slippage up and down the main line.  I don't know if that is described well enough for anyone to know what I am talking about but if it sounds familliar or similiar, I'd appreciate some instructions on how to tie it.

I am familiar with it from my youth when we trot lined regularly. But I never really learned to tie the knot either. I've been thinking of getting back into trot lining one of these days and like you have wondered how the heck that knot was tied. It stuck like glue to hold it to the line yet allowed the hook to move around and up and down the main line. Came loose quickly and easily with just a tug on the right place. Kinda wish I'd paid more attention.

If I had a dollar for everytime I thought that . . . .

Why do we realize the importance of lessons when the teachers are gone?  Where will be in another generation or 2?
