I have an 8mm Model 38 Turkish Mauser. When I shoot factory loads, everything is normal, puts a clean hole in the paper. But when I shoot my own loads, there is about an 1/8 inch black ring around the hole in the target. What causes this? I am shooting 185gr. Core Lokt Soft Points with 40 gr. of IMR 4350.

I have no clue what causes it but I have had it happen plenty of times just never thought twice about it. Are the loads accuate? If so I wouldnt worry about it. Just shoot and be happy. :grin:

I get a ring around the bullet hole every time I shoot a bullet with an exposed lead tip, and never when shooting ballistic tips of FMJ's. If I get what you're describing, then the ring around the bullet hole is lead transfer.

Thats what I would say it is... the lead tip on the bullet marking the target at impact.

That would make sense. The loads are accurate and have an exposed lead tip. The factory loads do too, but I have my own loads loaded down a bit.

I see the same thing with my loads using Nosler BTs and Accubonds. This is shooting at 100 yds at paper targets stapled to a plywood backstop. I suppose it would be due to the bullets impact on the plywood.
