Mounting scope on a BC
« on: July 11, 2005, 04:58:29 PM »
Went out and shot the BC yesterday.  The first shot took out a Wabbit that was dumb enough to sit and watch me sip coffee and slowly load a round.  The 45-70 may work on Buffler but it isn't the best round for Wabbits, unless they are the size of Godzilla.

The weather was dismal.  You can always tell it's summer in Oregon, the rain gets warmer.

I managed to get couple of 3" groups. with the BC despite the fog, drizzle and sideways rain.  I changed around the front sight inserts and removed the rear apeture altogether.  That worked but it is too slow to aim.  My old and decrepit eyes need a scope.

I will be ordering the mount off the H&R sight.  I plan to rob a vintage steel tube Weaver K4 off another rifle.  What is the preferred type/brand of rings to use with the H&R mount and what height should the rings be?

Thanks

Zeke, Welcome to the World of Handi-holics rifles :D
I use high leupold ringson all my Handis! With the K-4 Weaver
you might be able to use Medium rings.
 You are becomeing a Handi-holic.

Will you be wanting to sell the irons?

If so I'd be interested--I'd like a set for my Hornet.

I used medium Burris Signature Zees on my 45-70 BC with the Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 Mildot...The mediums work on the majority of my H&R/NEF rifles.

Weaver rings, H&R base, and an almost antique but rebuilt by the manufacturer 4X Leupold scope do fine on this restocked BC.

The mount for the BC is coming from H&R.  In the meantime I am ordering the $5.00 fix in the form of a buckhorn sight blade for the BC's rear sight.

As soon as the weekend rolls around I will be back at SW to see about getting a scope for the M1917.  I will be robbing the M1917's K4 scope to put on the BC.  Nothing like a good game of musical scopes.

Can't have a perfectly good gun sitting around with no scope on it.  Hopefully they will have something on sale or closeout.  I need a scope for the M99 as well.  Trying to shoot a peep sight in the crappy Oregon dizzlefest has given me a whole new respect for optics.

I have an old Weaver 2 3/4X with a post on an old Savage 99.  I'd really like that on my BC as I have a new Leopold for the 99.  Only thing is, I'm having too much fun with the stock sights on the BC....so it will have to wait!  44 Man

Quick is correct.  Came from Ed up in Iowa at Gunstocks Inc.  I truthfully do not recollect what the price was.  I never put the final gloss finish on mine, leaving it in a burnished state.  Now that last one Quick posted really is TOO darn pretty.  Almost too pretty to take in the woods.  Good job, whoever did the finish. I can definitely empathize with the effort that was put into it.

Mac11700 did that stock of his, it's got 18-20 coats of hand rubbed oil on it, and he's not finished with it yet!!! I have the same basic stock set with out the fancy wood and extras, but haven't started on it yet cuz I know once I start it, it's gonna be a bunch of work to finish it right!!

Yup, nice Galco recoil pad I got from ya on a youth checkered pistol grip walnut stock from Brownell's. The galco fits right over the recoil pad on the stock and makes it identical in length to the BC stock....Real nice to tame the recoil of the 45-70 or 405 Winchester!!!

Thanks,

The game of "Musical Scopes" continues.  I robbed the ancient K4 from the Enfield Sporter and put it on the BC.  Looks halfway decent.  The hammer just barely clears the scope.  I mounted the scope as far forward as possible to avoid the recoil assisted black eye.
I put my el-cheapo thrasher last resort 3x9 Bushnell scope on the Enfield so I could shoot it if I needed to.  Then out of desperation I went to SW, found a Nikon Buckmaster 4x40 in the discontinued bin and put it on lawaway.

Once the Buckmaster shows up it will probably be installed on the BC.  The K4 will go on my M99-R and I'll be looking for another 4x or a low power variable for the Enfield.

All this fuss because I bought a Handi.

Down the slippery slope I go.

Saw the  .223 Handi Ultra Varmint(the old one, not the fluted one) at SW.  Nice compact gun.  $239 out the door.............Don't have a varmint gun........Layaway...............Hmmmm......Sneak it in after work(I work swing shift)....

My amended 03 license showed up.  Have to start putting guns under the bed again.  This never ends.
