.22-250 + .17HMR Combo vs. .204 Ruger
« on: April 11, 2005, 09:31:37 AM »
:D  New to the midwest - and new to opportunities of varmint hunting.  Looking to get started, maybe purchasing one or two rifles to meet most of my needs.  Here is the question...

do I drop the monies to purchase both a .17HMR and .22-250 to cover my varmint hunting needs (or a similar combo)?

or

will something like the .204 Ruger meet most of my needs?  Or is the .204 something in between (too powerful for small game within 200 yards, but not powerful enough to get something out to 500 yds).

Any opinions?

i would scratch all of those choices and just get a .223 handi rifle.if it was me.but its your choice.the reason why the .223 is.....

ammo is cheap and the 45gr JHP's shoot amazing.

less recoil which makes seeing hits easier.

alot more ammo available.

and if you reload there is also alot of components for it.

hope this helps.

also, this is just MY 2 cents so if you really want a .22-250 and a 17 then get it.

have a good day

Well.............first I had a 22-250......then a 223.....then a 17 HMR....and now a 204 Ruger   I love them all.......17HMR is the one I hunt with most, but haven't even sighted in my Encore 204 yet....it will probably be my long range rifle for varmits.

You can't beat the 223 for all around varmint hunting. It will reach to 300-400 yards on a small varmint and is VERY cheap to shoot.

Plus, full metal jackets and soft points are available for small game hunting...OR reduced loads.

204 Ruger is WAY WAY too powerful for small game hunting at any range because ALL you can buy for it now is ballistic tips or hollowpoints, both designed for maximum energy transfer and damage on varmints.

17HMR is generally nasty on small game unless you use the new 20 grain loads (Hornady or CCI). However, I wouldn't consider it a good all around varmint rifle. I use mine for strictly small, small varmints (Starlings, field mice). It is great for that purpose too!! It will however kill larger game but you will have to put the bullet in the right area. A gut shot groundhog will run away every time.

22-250 is a great long range varmint caliber. It will produce about 300-400fps faster than the 223 but with more expense in powder and money and barrels and kick. The only reason I would buy a 22-250 would be if I wanted a long range varmint gun in 22 caliber. I already have a long range varmint caliber however, a 25-06. It will do all the 22-250 will do and much much more at longer ranges. If you are even good enough to extend the 250's range to it's max it would still be a hard choice to make over other calibers that will do the same.

Some reasons to recommend the 223 are:

-Cheap
-Effective out to 400 yards on medium varmints (groundhog)
-Fast with 30 grain bullets (4000+ fps)
-Up to 100 grain bullets can be used (Barnes I believe make these)
-Small powder consumption
-No kick for the view of bullet impact
-Inherently accurate
-EVERYBODY makes 223 so availability is there
-Small game up to deer if you wish (64 grain PowerPoint from Win)

If you want another gun for better range on varmint go for something like a 243 or 25-06. They will be much better than a 22 cal centerfire for varmints at long range. (500+ yards)

You also need to look at the legal part of choosing a rifle.  Out in Washington state you cannot hunt small game with a rifle larger than 22cal during any large game season unless you have a licence and tag for the animal in season.  So if it is Elk season you cannot hunt Coyotes with any rifle that is legal to kill an Elk with like a .243 or 25-06 unless you have an Elk license and tag.  So if you want to hunt varmints year around and not buy all the tags for large game you gotta use a .22 or smaller.  Also Forest Grouse can be taken with rimfires or shotguns and center fire rifles are not permitted for hunting in parts of the state at all.  Larry

You can save a lot of time and money by getting one rifle that will do it all.
Your most economic choice is to either get the 223 or 204. If you don't reload the 223 is by far the most practical choice, It will do all you need to do. Good luck Sir..........Joe............

Are we talking small game or varmints?  Small game I would recommend a 22 long rifle.

Varmint I would recommend a 204, which easily reaches 500 yards with amazing retained velocity.  If your deciding between 204 and 22-250, I think that the 204 is the obvious choice.  Just pull up the ballistics on each and see for yourself.  Mine is an Encore and a buddy of mine has a 22-250 in the same rig he is now selling the 22-250 for a 204 barrel, after a day of side by side.

I dumped my first coyote with the my 204 last night. 365 yards with about a 5 mph crosswind.  He never knew what hit him, dropped like a stone.  It was nearly dark when I walked out to him and I think I found the enterance hole, either that or it was a tick mark.  The exit was about 2x the diameter of the slug, after it broke its neck.  I was very impressed.  I wish it would have been prime, because it was the nicest hide friendly kill I've ever had.

Here is an interesting article about the 204 that my good friend MT4XFore put me onto.

By the way, I forgot to mention that you get to see impact of your bullet with the 204. Pretty cool on the yote last night.

:D Thanks for all in input - between this thread and the PM's, I finally made my choice.

Well, I finally decided on a .22-250 and .17HMR as my choices.

Picked up a CZ-550 .22-250 (varmint model with a HS Percision Stock).  Fell in love with the trigger.  If its anything like my other CZ, it should be a shooter.  It took me 4 months to get it out of layaway.

Now all I need is a scope...

and of course, next is the .17HMR

I think you made a good choice, You have the best of two worlds. I have  the 22Hornet, 17 rem,222rem,223rem,222rem-mag,22-250,6mm rem, 6.5JDJ,6.5X06 and on and on for my varmint hunting, But i use my Hornet
the 17 rem and 22-250 most of the time for varmint hunting. GOOD CHOICE :D .......Joe.........

If you don't al ready have one you got to add some sort of 22lr, a ruger 10/22  or even a bolt of some sort. Up where I am it is not un common to run into a pd infested field that you can't shoot  centerfires in and ther are so many that feeding the 17 gets to be expensive.  That's where the 22 shine's.

My varmint rigs are 204 , 17hmr and 22lr if I could afford it i would use the 17 all day.

Already have my share of .22cal.  Have a CZ452 Lux, and a Marlin 39A (had the Marlin since 1970, when my Dad gave me his. He had it since the mid 50's)

I am planning on getting a CZ452 American Varmint model .17HMR for my choice of the .17HMR.

Any opinions on that?
