OK guys.....the new stock for the .204 that you gave me is finished.

I took some pics, and here they are:

The original OEM Handi Rifle in .204 Ruger:


The original stock was actually one of the prettier stocks that I've seen on a Handi. It had some tiger stripping in the grain, and I was kind of struggling with weather or not I wanted to replace it. But I did.

I started with fitting the stock to the reciever. There was approximately 1/8" of excess wood around the area where the wrist sits against the reciever. I sanded this down with 60 grit sandpaper until it almost fit flush. Then I hit it with 100 grit until I had all of the scratches and machining marks out of the wood. I did the same with the forearm stock. I had to fit it to the plastic pivot piece that screws to the end of it. When I had the scratches out, I started "raising the grain". I wet the wood, dried it quickly with a hair drier, then sanded the "fuzzies" down with 220 grit. I probably did this ten or so times, until there were no more fuzzies when I dried it.

After this was complete, I started the staining process using Tung Oil Finish. I probably put around fifteen coats of TOF on, rubbing with 0000 Steel Wool between coats. When the pores were pretty much filled with Tung Oil, I started applying a product that I got from Gunstocks Inc called Linspeed. As far as I can tell, it's just a fast drying Boild Linseed Oil. I think I put three coats of this on, mostley just because I kept ending up with a bunch of crap in my finish. Still have some, but I'm calling it good  






I'd like to thank everyone for giving me the gun. I can't wait to wring it out on a prairie dog town.

I did do a trigger job on it. Didn't require any stoning, just polished the peices, and didn't touch the hammer sear/trigger interface. The trigger is sitting at 2 lbs four ounces now and breaks like a glass rod. Once the Linspeed has had a little more time to cure, I'm going to get it out and do some shooting.

When finishing wood, the best way I have found is to stain first, oil or dye stains , either one.
then wipe down well and after at least 1 day of drying time, apply shellac, regular 3lb cut from the hardware store, reduced to 1 1/2 or 1 lb cut with denatured alcohol, a sanding with 400 grit after one coat, and then another coat with 600 grit, usually takes care of all whiskers, if not, do it again.
Then tung oil or most any other finish will do well.
Even the low gloss water based polyurethanes look good then.

  Didn't get to see the pictures....Said it was not available....I am interested in the trigger job you spoke of...I have read some postings that spoke of honing down the sear an what not... I'm not quite prepared to go that far but would be willing to polish a bit... If you could fill me in :-)

only thing I can see is a bunch of orange boxes with "cupidfish.com" in them.....so much for another photo storage site.... :cry:  I noticed "freephotoserver.com now lists a bunch of different sites to store photos on...haven't tried any of them yet...I liked the way freephotoserver was set up....EASY as eatin pie...and no storage limits...corse ya coupdn't go back and look at the pic w/o the address but it was super easy to post a link on here......P.S> looks like quick has a new stash of gif's to play with... :wink:

Hunt101 is back online, I've got several email notices stating this and that my previous photos stored there will be available next week...not that I'm going back there.....Photobucket.com just works too well!!

Thanks for the warm welcome....I've been reading some of the posts and have learned a good bit...I have owned a Handi .204 for about 6 months now...Love it...I am an avid reloader and just started some load developments...Going to the range Saturday to see how I did...

Deputydog, follow these two urls and you'll get really good instructions for a Handi trigger job.  I used the second one more than the first one for the first trigger job I did.

I don't know when I'll be able to get my pics back.  They say they'll have them archived soon, but as far as I know, they still don't.  I know they're still not showing up.  I'm going to take some more pics of the rifle and put them on photobucket as soon as I have a chance.
