pyrodex in flinter?

i have just recently read that pyrodex doesn't reliably go off in flinters and that you need real bp in front of pyrodex if you are gonna use it. here's the thing though. my father-in-law gave me a tc percussion and some pyrodex and of course it works great. so not knowin any better i bought a cva hawken flinter and use pyrodex in it. i use ffffg to prime and pyrodex rs and it fires immediately every time. no hang fires or any problems. i have only had it to the range, no huntin yet. am i just lucky? did i get a good gun or is the pyrodex thing just a myth? thanks for your time.

Belive that Pyrodex has changed over the years...the earlier, the harder it was to ignite.  Have had it work in some flintlocks, others just won't kick it off.  Proably has more to do with the diameter of the vent than anything else...but the FFFFg is a good step for reliable igniton.

The T/C Fire Storm, IIRC, is a flintlock that's designed to use Pyrodex and Pellets no less.  It has a special designed breech plug that directs the flash from the priming powder.  The only problem that I see is that you'll still need real black powder for the priming charge and since I use 3fg for both main charge and priming in my flintlock it'd be more trouble then it'd really be worth to use Pyrodex in it.

You just had a good day. Trust me.
 The issue of Pyro in flinters is igniton temp. true bp goes off at 400 degrees,,pyrodex is near 800 degrees for a good flash/boom.
 And No!! Pyrodex isn't Better!  It's paten Pyrodex.

If it could change,,Why would the same outfit sell a powder too compete with it's self, called "Triple 7"?

 When you use that whole pound of Pyro'RS, under varied conditions like,,a windy day, or a damp morning, or,,,aw heck,, it ain't a myth,,pyrodex and flinters just ain't a good mix. you just had a good day

I have tried Pyrodex RS in my T/C Hawken Flinter, and way to many misfires, real 4F in the pan, huge falme in the pan, but no boom, well, maybe 1 out of every 5 trigger pulls. Misfires with real Goex 2F in the main charge, only maybe 2 in alot of shots, but that was probably my fault, not the guns. Hell, I had some misfires with my Caplock Renegade and RS, only 1 ever with real black powder. Pyrodex is better for inlines for sure, but works very nicely in them!! Jack.

HAve gotten Pyrodex to go off in a couple of flinters...just not in any of them reliably.

Could get loose Pyrodex to go if (1) the vent is over size and (2) I load the gun WRONG.  By "wrong" would fill the pan with FFFFg to the brim and be sure to trickle some into the vent...this is NOT the way to get fast igniton, but it will FlitttttttttttBOOM if you just have to do it (with black, it's Fboom).

Flinters are for black powder....leave the Pyrodex for other uses.

I too have tried pyrodex in my flinter brown bess, it would go boom, but only after a milisecond , after the flint lit the 4fg, but I tried something I read about, I udse 10 grains of 3fg goex, and 70 grains of pyrodex rs, well not only did it have instant ignition, but it gave one heck of a 3shot raged hole at 50 yards off a bench, I had of yet never gottn that kind of rifle accuracy out of a smooth bore untill that time, but it also had a bit oh recoil but not bad , I have resently sold that bess.  kjg
