6mm-30/30 Contender?
« on: August 15, 2005, 07:19:39 AM »
Does anyone know where you can get a 6mm-30/30 for a Contender?  I think EA Brown used to make them, but he says they don't do any Contender barrels anymore unless it comes through the custom shop.
Thanks,
mkee

I think Bullberry used to make them--a 6mm Bullberry.  Don't know if it is based on the 30-30 case, but it might be a place to start.  Good-luck...BCB

Mike Sirios at OTT should be able to help you with this one whether it be a rechamber or a new barrel.  Another option would be a 6mm-30x30 Imp. (6mm-7x30 Waters).
Here is a link to his webpage.

The reason EABCo doesn't make them now is they never did. They out sourced them to a company no longer in business. Bullberry chambers the round I think and for sure one or two 6mms based on the .30-30 case. Unless you just have a ton of .30-30 cases you need to use up you might want to consider the 6 JDJ on the much stronger .225 Win. case from SSK. Dies and tested loading data will be much easier to come by.

6mm bullberry

I have a 14 inch 6mm bullberry barrel from Bullberry and its a great shooter.  Very accurate.  I have a 22 inch Virgin Valley 6-223 barrel that has been rechambered to 6mm-30-30  by OTT that is amazing.  Over 3100 fps with 80 Sierra Single shot bullets.  My grandson got two deer with it over 200 yds last season.  Case forming is very easy and fireforming also.  Fred has the dies and lots of loading data on his web site so loading data isn't a problem.  Great having something to use up all those old 30-30 cases.  Case life isn't a problem either as I have some that have been reloaded 12 times and look like new.  You never have a problem finding 30-30 cases but don't know how easy it is to find 225 cases when you want them.

I have a 6mm 30-30 AI which is nearly the same as the 6mm Bullberry Imp. It is one of the best wildcat cartridges I have found for a Contender...mine is a carbine length that ...like Neils is a shooter. I agree case life is exceptional using standard 30-30 brass and if you want to start from scratch with load development you can use .375 Win brass which is still easier to find than .225 Win brass and every bit a heavy duty. I shoot 58 gr. V maxs in mine for pds and 85 gr. TSXs for deer.....
Most of my load data I worked up starting with what I got from Fred on his Bullberry website and the dies I made up from other sets of cheap dies.

Yep, I agree with getting a 6mm wildcat that is based on the 30-30 parent case.  Brass for the 225 is twice as much as 30-30 brass, plus I have never picked up any 225 brass at the shooting range!  I have recovered hundreds and hundreds of once-fired 30-30 brass.
Many years ago there was an article in Handloader Magazine about the 6mm Bullberry.  I looked for that copy, but I couldn’t find it.  I have them all so I know I have it but just can’t locate it.  At that time or thereabouts, I was looking for a unique cartridge to shoot in my Contender.  This 6mm Bullberry looked very inviting.  But I settled on another cartridge based on the great little 30-30 case.  It was developed by some guy named Waters—the rest is history and I have never looked back! Good-luck…BCB

Thanks for all the feedback.  I think I'll check Bullberry out.  I had a 6.5 mm JDJ and it just didn't do anything for me.  Of the JDJ's I have, the 358 is my favorite so far.  Plan to get more in the future, but for now I'm researching this for my father-in-law.  We both have 7-30's and love them, but he was interested in the 243.
Thanks again.
