how yall fill about the .308 for deer??

I suppose they could take the recoil, but how the heck they gonna pull the trigger without any fingers? Heck, I dont even think theycan shoulder a gun, I dont think their appendages bend that way :-D .

The .308 should be a very good caliber, really depends on the type bullet used.

Brian, that's why God made antlers and sharp hooves for deer. Otherwise they might be hunting US! :-D

I'm sorry, I have no opinion on the .308. Haven't shot it, nevermind shot it at deer. Might in the future. I just had to respond to Brian's statement.

The 308 is a great caliber for deer. Bullets are cheap and available everywhere and you won't see much difference in bullet performance on deer between it and a 30-06 out to 300 yards. It's a shorter hull so you can get it in a short action lighter rifle if you desire. I've killed deer with one in the past and if I didn't already have a 7mm-08 (which is a 308 hull necked down to accept a 7mm bullet) I'd probably buy another one.

I have used the 308 for a couple of years. Never really thought I would like it . . . but I do. It will do whatever you need it to on deer with reasonable recoil and good accuracy. I reload, so have never shot factory out of it, but they tend to be nice carry rifles that have no problems out to 300 yds (should you need it). Sierra BTHP seem to shoot best out of mine.

what bullet weights do you guys use? I tried some 180s but they didn't so so hot (good enough to kill a deer with...but the groups were like 4" when I was sighting it in). I shot some Wolf 150's and was getting .75" groups. Considering Wolf... I'd hope to get at least that from a quality, high-priced round.

I used 165 gn this year, but 150 would be more than enough for any deer a person could run into.

Agreed Fishman, time to get back on topic. Ive not personaly used it for deer myself. But I have seen it used on animals as large as smaller Moose (around the 800lb range,) here in NH out to about 150 yards, so it should do rather nice on deer. To be honest I think the .30 bore can probably claim the title of killing the most game animals thatn any other caliber. So plunk away

.308 for deer, heck yes......... excellant rnd for deer. works on
Elk too !! I personally use a 30/30, but grew up hunting with my
cousins in Michigan, both of them used a .308. they have taken
280 lb whitetail then came out to visit me here in Wa and taken
140 lb blacktail at 300 yards !! I would never consider that range
from my ol 30/30. I really like taking out the old lever 30/30, but
after seeing my cuz take out that blacktail at 300 yds (312 range finder)
with a $150.00 bushnell scope, dang that would double my range.
a friend here in Wa state that introduced me to Elk hunting
15 years ago, used a .308 for Elk, his range was 250 yards, with a
180 grn bullet. he was very successful with it, it, after
20 years of using his .308 browning, he recently 3 years ago bought
a .308 winchester.

The 308 Win. is a great deer cartridge. I have a Winchester model 88 lever action in 308 Win. I've shot two deer with it. I use Remington 150 gr. Pointed Soft Point Core-Lokt ammo. It shoots one inch groups and is really pleasant to shoot. The first one I shot in the shoulder and it dropped on the spot. The exit wound was about the size of a golf ball. The second one I shot in the heart/lung area and the deer ran about 40 yards or so. It left about a 3 inch exit hole!

I like the 150 gr. bullets for deer in both the 308 Win. and a 30-06. They open up quicker then the 165 gr. and a lot quicker then the 180 gr. transferring more energy. They also do more meat damage, sometimes a lot more! I guess it comes down to what shoots better in you rifle.

I have a remington 742 and a savage model 99 in cal. 308 and for deer I dont think you can find a better round. Remington 150 gr. bullets are cheap so you can afford to shoot your rifles more often and become a better marksman which is the real deal. I strongly recommend the 308.

Got to be in the top five or so as the best deer cartridge available. I have dropped more deer in their tracks with the 308 than any other gun. I use 150 grain Ballistic tips or 150 Grain Sierra pro hunter bullets. The other four in my top five? 270, 280. 6.5x55 and 25-06.

there is a reason why the military uses the 308 (7.62 NATO) as a sniper round.

An old model 100 Winchester .308 was one of the best deer guns I ever shot. I took both whitetail and mule deer as well as several elk with the gun. Someone needed it more than I did, they stole it out of my open truck while I was using the restroom at a service station in New Mexico. This experience taught me two lessons, first, never place a firearm in a vehicle where someone walking by can see it. Second, Lock the door stupid...................

I am a big fan of the .308 for deer. It is available in every action type. Recoil is manageable. It is accurate. There are plenty of factory loadings.

Components are readily available and inexpensive.

Ballistically it is capable of killing deer at ranges further than the average guy using it can hit his target, and by average guy I mean me.

I imagine that with good bullets it would be capable of harvesting larger game like Elk and Moose. Look how many moose have been killed with a .303. If the .303 can do it, I would guess that a .308 could under the same conditions.

In fact, Bass Pro Shops is having a sale...

Sierra pro hunters in a 150gr pill have treated me very well. I first bought them because they were cheap and I figured it would be a good way get lots of trigger time. Since then, they have taken a handful of deer, all going no more than 20yds. I've bought a few premium bullets for it and most shoot pretty well, but when it's time to make meat the pro hunters keep answering the call (and in dramatic fashion!). The .308 will do most anything you ask of it (within reason), and do it more efficiently than most. A great cartridge all around! Good luck and good shooting.

Yes the .308 Winchester cartridge is an excellent all round cartridge and it's the one I shot my first Deer with. However I found out then that heavier is not always better

due to the fact we were hunting Roe Does which are light deer weighing about 35 lbs I loaded up some Sierra 180 grn Pro Hunters to a mid range load hoping that it would not produce too much blood shot meat which I had heard so much about. The shot came from a tree stand at about 90 yards and I mistakenly aimed at the middle of the deer. Yes a bit far back but the hunting Gods must have smiled upon me that morning :lol: as although some of the intestines came out of the 4" long exit wound in the offside ribs they did not rupture.

The bullet broke one rib going in and took out 3 coming out, which was quite good however when we dressed the Doe out we found jacket fragments then core fragments :shock: the bullet had exploded! Since then I have tried to stay away from Sierra bullets as velocity was only about 2450 fps and seeing how the 180 Grn bullet would normally be expected to be used on much larger game it should to my mind at least not come apart on the ribs of a 35 lbs Roe Doe. The Doe just dropped then rolled over so as for effectiveness on killing the Doe I cannot complain and the blood blew out of the exit wound in a fan spray all over the bush behind her.

I switched to using the 165 Grn Speer Flat based bullet as I also had a .300 WM Ruger No1 by then so used one bullet for both. The .300 WM is gone traded off and I now have a bespoke 30-30 Bolt action rifle which shoots 125-130 Grn Spitzers with superb accuracy at around 2850 fps so I am trying to find a load for my CZ-Brno 601 using this bullet so again I can use one for both rifles. the .308 has taken a fair number of Deer both Roe and Muntjac but lately I have been using the 30-30 more :-) When I can get my reloading gear set up again after a move I will try to get back to load development for the .308 as I also have some 150 grn Hornady RN bullets to try out.

There are other comparable deer cartridges, but none better. Hey rockbilly, I had a M100 in .308 too. An excellent rifle indeed.

the .308 is a good allaround caliber. I think if you use the right bullet it would be more than enough for any east coast animals.
