Calling all Grandpas...

I have 4 grandchildren. I have furnished them with their first guns, 2 or 3 each.
   I consider this as a Grandpa's privilege and duty.

  Do you agree ?....If so, tell us what models you provided first for them...

As long as they are mature enough to behave safely and responsibly, I'm all for arming the entire family!

:roll: I provided all three of my children with their own gun and firearms training at an early age.  Today one daughter still has a .243 Remington and a S&W .357.  The son still has the guns I gave him (several), his son, 11 years old,  has a .22, .223 and .243 rifle (and there are several others he will get when he gets older).  He is a fairly good shot with all of them.  The other daughter gave her gun, a Winchester model 70 in .225 winchester back to me.  She is married to a wimp that does not believe anyone needs a gun.  For years every time I had the opportunity I took their daughter hunting or out to shoot with me.  She is now 16 and wants her own gun.  It will come soon, I may have to keep it for her until she comes of age and gets a place of her own.

I sent my grandson a .50 hawken for his 12th. I think it will be a great
learning tool! I'll get up to Joisey soon for a little range time, and basketball (I'm not ready to let him beat me yet)!

Glad to hear your replies..
   I  have 3 grandsons, ages 18,19 & 21.. I started them each with a .22LR. and undertook much of their training, along with their Dad.
   Other guns followed..
   Did it pay off ?...Well, as I have posted on GB in other places, my 21 yr old is being deployed to Iraq, and is assigned as the designated sniper for his Marine special ops unit..( ask you keep Josh in your prayers)

   Josh's little sister, Hunter (now 6) has a little Rossi "matched pair" that Grandpa gave her. Right now she's inclined to put the stock under her arm to shoot it...but shoot it she does !!


    Grandpa loves taking each of them to our range in the woods.

I have 2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter.  Bought 'em all their first .22 rifles.  So far 1 grandson has showed interest in hunting, and I just bought him a .410 this last Sunday!  He wants to go deer hunting (he has been goin' with his dad for a couple years as a spectator).  Would have liked to get him a 20 guage, but he's a little guy for his age (11), he's shot his buddy's 20 guage and didn't like it, soooo..... the .410 will hafta do for now.  Oh, and also got all the grandkids their first fishin' rods!

Our oldest Daughter is a single parent(son in-law was killed by a drunk driver in Oct. of 2000) and we have been helping to raise the Grandkids ever since.  When the Grandkids turned 4 I started them with a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun and when they turned 8 I bought them Ruger M10/22's except for the Grandson who wanted a M77/22.  When the oldest turned 12, the legal age to get a hunting license here in Calif., I built her a 7mm-08 that she wanted.  The Grandson wants either a 7.65mmx53 Argentine Mauser(like what his Grandpa started with) or a 7mm-08 like his sister.  I built all our Kids their first big game rifles and am doing so for the Grandkids.  Lawdog
