Will standard match velocity ammo consistently knock down the larger rams used in hunters pistol matches (rimfire)?

Our club host a 1/2 match (fun match) on the 2nd Saturday each month. I would say standard velocity will take 80-90%+ of the rams. It helps if they are "soft set" where 1/2 the feet are off of the back rail, this can be a challenge on a windy day. I have only rang a few, but I have only shot the 1/2 scale like 3 times... Hard game to get into...you miss one and it's hard to care after that..LOL

Chicken is correct if you're asking about the smallbore hunter pistol animals. However, if you're asking about the heavier hunter pistol animals, then no, standard velocity will not take them down reliably. A perfect hit, with the right tailwind and they'll go down. This is of course assuming you are talking about pistols and not rifles.

The reason I asked is my son is shooting in 4-H and they use the smallbore hunter pistol animals. He wants to test ammo for his new rifle and I was thinking he might need something with more velocity. Most of the kids use winchester dynapoints, but he wants to experiment for better accuracy. Do the smallbore cowboy lever rifle and the smallbore hunters pistol use the same animals?

We shoot the smallbore hunter pistol targets with both pistols and cowboy lever guns. I have had good hits without rams falling many times with standard velocity match ammo out of my Marlin 39a levergun. I'd guess 60-70% of them fall on good hits. I very rarely lose one with "high velocity" ammo, though. The standard velocity ammo I was using was Wolf Match Target, as it's what the Marlin gets the best accuracy with. I think I get a little over 1050fps out of that gun with that ammo.
