Rate of twist for .308 Winchester
« on: September 29, 2005, 05:30:49 PM »
I've noticed that a lot of manufacturers use a 1 in 12" twist in their .308 barrels, but some use a 1 in 10" twist.  Is there any advantage to one rate of twist over the other?  All I can figure is that 1 in 10" might stabilize 180 grain bullets better, but is there really an appreciable difference?

I think the 1:10 twist is actually more for the 200 - 220 grain bullets.  Manufactures still use the 1:10 twist for the 30-06, but I also have noticed that many manufacturers are using a 12" twist in the .308.  I would guess that is because most people only shoot 180 grain or lesser weight bullets in their .308's and so the slower twist is optimal for these weights, whereas there are still a few people left who like to shoot heavy bullets in the '06.  Some people argue that slower twists reduce pressures and increase velocities for a given load, as well as accuracy with lighter bullets.  I don't have enough experience to offer an opinion on that, but would like to say that I personally favor faster twists so as to maximize my bullet options.

I have a Browning Micro-medallion in .308Win.  It only weighs 6.0lbs., with a thin, 20" barrel.  It has a 1 in 12" barrel twist.  It does it's best with 125 and 150gr. bullets.  Evn 168gr. is an iffy proposition and 180grs. are out of the question.  I'm not too happy about it, but simply didn't know at the time it wasn't going to shoot the heavier bullets.  It does rather well with Nosler 125gr. Bal. Tips and Sierra 150gr. PSPs.
Best wishes.
