6mm Remington and Goats

I just picked up a Mark X Mauser in 6mm and it will be what i carry in September on a Goat hunt. I am looking at using 100BTSP Power Shok or possible a 100gr SST depending on what shoots the best. This rifle has a 26" tube any ideas on the velocity gain? I was thinking maybe 100fps. Visited the ranch yesterday and saw a couple 15" and one buster 17" or better. This rifle is also a heavy barrel.

It's been quite a while since I've seen the MK X in 6mm so I can't recall if the the twist was 1-10 or 1-12. If 1-12 you may have problems with the 100 gr bullets stabilizing. However, if it's 1-10 then I suggest working up a load using H4831SC. Make sure you get the "SC". This is a very good powder for the 6mm, especially with the 26" barrel. I got excellent accuracy with Hornady 100 gr SPBTs at around 3200 fps. I also used fire formed/NS'd W-W cases and WLR primers. With the 85 gr Sierra HPBT I pushed 3300+ fps and it was a rock chuck killer extraordinair. I use past tense as I shot the barrel out. Your Mk X should do fine for Goats, 17", eh? I'd go him if I was you.

     Thanks for your reply. I took it to my gunsmith and the twist is 1-10. Used 100gr Federal  Power-Shok yesterday and got 3/4-1" group in the 5 groups I shot after sight-in. My next load will be a 95gr SST and last a 100gr Noster Partition. If they shoot better i'll switch then if not the 100gr Federals will be the factory load for Goats. After the hunt the rifle will be put into a Boyd JRS sporter and glass bedded with a timney trigger added. The scope I put on is a Eagle Eye Optics 4x-16-50 with illuminated crosshair. This puppy is clear as bell and for my ole eyes the right scope. It is big and heavy but I need all the help I can get.

The 6mm Remington was never offered in a 12" twist so it is no surprise the rifle has a normal 10" twist.  The velocity difference between a 26" barrel and what other length?  

From the Speer #9 Manual with 100-grain RP factory loads:
20" barrel = 2955 fps
22" barrel = 2994
26" barrel = 3174

From G&A 11/81, 100-grain handload, all in same barrel cut off:
20" barrel = 3004 fps
22" barrel = 3077
24" barrel = 3127
26" barrel = 3162
