The local shop has a 7.5" .454 premier with a tsob base, Leupold 4x scope and an FA holster for $1650. What do you guys think?

I'll give you my opinion if you promise not to get mad....

It's a fairly decent price. Leupold has changed their handgun scope line some, but the 4X is a solid peice of glass. The T'SOB costs around $150 new and the premiers retail around $2k.

The main thing is, if this is a firearm you want and can live with the price; it will be a good deal for you.

Ask yourself first is it equipped the way you want it to be? If not then the price of the extras is kinda immaterial unless you hope to sell them. Do you plan to shoot it scoped? If so then the T'SOB is a real worthwhile item for sure. Personally I'm not that fond of the Leupold 4X because of the sorta small FOV of it but it is a solid scope. Just has a smaller FOV than I like which is why I usually use variables.

You really should be able to buy the gun new with full warranty for about that price if you find a dealer who isn't wanting to get rich on each sale. Buying it used there is no warranty.

So the question I'd be asking myself is do I want it like it is enough to swap a life time warranty for the scope and base. My answer would be no. I can't speak to your answer.

My question is this. The premier grade come with a limited Lifetime warranty to the original owner. What do you really get with a limited lifetime warranty? In my opinion, the guns are very good guns, I don't for see having a problem with the gun, I know stuff happens, but I am sure that FA would work with you even if you are not the original buyer.

But what a gather from you post Graybeard is, it is not worth buying any premier grade gun because it no longer has a warranty. To me the real question is, is this gun then worth what the original purchaser pays. Knowing that if they go to sell it, no one will want it because the is no longer a warranty. personally I could care less about there limited warranty. I bought the gun because of the reputation and fine workmanship.

The warranty to the original purchaser as I understand it covers about anything but intentional neglect. Even that might be covered ONCE. One day Bob Baker was telling me about a guy shooting too soft jacketed bullets at full pressures. Cracked the barrel from forcing cone to front of it as I recall. I think Bob said he replaced it but warned him that he wouldn't again if he continued to do that. They warn of using bullets too soft at full pressures.

Whatever breaks or wears or whatever should be covered. That has to be worn something regardless of how good a gun is. Other than warranty and finish there is little to no difference between Field Grade and Premier as I understand it. I actually prefer the less polished look of the Field Grade on a hunting gun but like life time warranties too.

Are new ones worth the price. Yeah I think so and so do most all owners I'm aware of. Is a used one a good buy? Can be but depends on price. I just see too many of them being listed at prices I personally consider excessive. In those cases a new one is the way to go in my opinion.

Graybeard, I called freedom Arms today. They are some very nice people. I spoke to them about there warranty. Yes they will cover almost everything with the warranty to the original owner, but if he neglects it or if it gets damaged from a accident it is not covered. I also asked about a used gun. They said it would be a minimal charge to the new owner, but they would take care of the gun with no problem. There conclusion was as mine, they make a great produce and don't for see many problems if any at all.

Hey CK,

Im going to spin off something that GB mentioned. When I consider spending that kind of cash on a gun I want the guns to have specific options. Im just funny that way. The price you quoted is a fair price for the gun but for someone like me, who starts to squeak when spending those kinds of dollars, the price isnt low enough. If thats not exactly what you want I would hold off because there are better used deals out there than $1650.00.

Well I was thinking about the warranty thing also but then again I have some cheap guns that have not broke yet.

No the gun is not exactly how I would have ordered it myself. I would like a 5 1/8" barrel with a trigger job and a .45 colt cylinder. Now having said that I think it would be very doable if it came with the extra cylinder.

Another thing I have thought is selling off some of the extras to recoup some cost and then chop the barrel.

By the way its been there since at least last thanksgiving so it may not be such a good deal.

I'm going to have to go along with Gray Beard and Scott, I know the gun may be worth the price, But i think you can beat it. I would rather buy the gun from a dealer that will work with you and then put the scope and rings plus the bases you wanted and yes the tsob is the best out there.
And the warranty in your name is essential for a gun that you may keep for the rest of your life. Thats my take on it...........Joe.........

Man I am glad I did not ask for your advice when I bought my used FA. :-D But I am happy with my purchase and the amount I spent. But if it is not the gun you wanted, them hold out and get what you want.

You can listen to all of our advice but you are the only one that has to be happy.

i dont know about you guys, but most gun shops i have been to have an asking price on used guns. more often than not, they will accept a lower bid on a piece that has been there a while. offer the guy a lower amount, if he takes it, fine; if not, let it gather more dust.

i personally wouldnt pay that much for that setup in used condition. i got my used field grade 44 mag for $900. i would offer the guy no more than 1400 for that set up. there are better deals to be had.

I asked the owner if he would take less but he is selling it for his friend and the price is firm. I dont know but I would have rather kept the thing than let it sit for a year without being used or getting the money out of it. :roll:

supply and demand. good for him if he is doing good business. i think it is great. but... the gun is still used and has no warrenty. so essentially the premier grade is now a field grade. and you dont know what the previous owner has done to it (see some posts about guys insisting they are "A-o.k." to shoot 45 colts in their 454 cylinders). like g.b. said, for that much you can have a new premier grade with the warrenty, and set it up how you want it. dont apply new prices to used items (scope and mount). used is used. sometimes you get a great deal, other times you just bought a giant headache.

in the end, each of us has our own ideas about this. to me, there are better deals to be had. and if you dont believe it, watch some of the internet auction sites for a couple of weeks.

I don't feel I have to watch the internet sites. I got a great deal on mine and as long as I am happy with my deal, I could care less what others think. But trying to down play all the extras thrown in as just a bunch of used stuff is crazy in my opinion. If I were to set up my gun as the previous owner I would of spent well over $2300.00. But I got it all for $1450.00. As soon as I shoot a new gun, everything on it and including the gun would be considered used. The only thing I did not get is the warranty. :wink:

I know where there's a FG with two cylinders, dies, brass, Leupold 2x w/base, custom grips, FA ammo, finicky sight.... $2k.
