I'm heading up to V. Bay in August for a bear hunt. Anybody from that area have any tips for a Wisconsinite?? Also, how is the border these days for bringing over liquid baits?

We are getting baits from a supplier here in Wisconsin called Bear Scents (www.bearscents.com, if you want to check them out). They are mostly fruit scents and anise. I think we may have one bacon scent. Also one called Big Paw, which is used like a honey burn.

liquid baits are fine. just make sure all your paperwork to temporarily register your rifle is in order and done ahead of time. make sure there is no contraband in your vehicle like leftover handgun ammo etc. you will also need to stop at the u.s. customs port that you are leaving through and get your import papers in order to bring a bear back to the u.s. Try to cross at a bigger port... fewer questions and more experienced officers.

Thanks Upnorth. Didn't know about preregistering rifles. How long does that take? Do you have to register muzzleloaders, how about bows? We are crossing at International Falls. One of the guys going with us and has a DWI from 10 years ago, I hear that its tough to cross with one of those on your record. He went thru all the hoops to get permission to cross. He got finger printed at the cop shop, then sent $200 to the FBI for them to ok his record. Unfortunately he sent a personal check, which they don't take. They sent it back 8 weeks later untouched. To late in the game to send it back and processed. Do you think he will be able to get through?? Does it make a difference if your hunting or fishing??

I replied to your other post about the d.w.i. bows do not need to be registered, rifles and m/l do. Didn't your outfitter give you the info about the cites permits, and registation info?? He knows your coming from the states...... You'd think he would help you with this stuff? search this site. www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca. look for memorandum d-19-13-2 under temporary visitors to canada, importing firearms. your temp. registration is only good for 60 days. contact info: Fort Frances bridge, 101 church st.
