The Great Plains Hunter has a 1 in 48 twist. It is usually used with conicals but may or may not shoot PRB well. The Great Plains Rifle has a 1 in 60 twist and mine shoots PRB very well. (-2" at 75 yds. Better than my eyes can shoot with open sights) They are practically identical guns except for the twist rates and the barrels are interchangeable, all other things being the same. (caliber and action type)

No, the Lyman Great Plains Hunter has a 1:32" twist barrel and is made for shooting conicals and sabots.  I doubt it will handle roundballs worth a hoot.  I do agree that the Great Plains Rifle is an excellent roundball rifle.  When I do everything right, my .54cal Great Plains Rifle will shoot groups that are one ragged hole, at 50 yards.

Well you just miss the paper the rest of the shots and claim they all hit the same hole.
Seriously, if I have a good day, I have shot groups with the edges of all the holes touching, maybe close to 1".  I admit this is not my norm but I can count on the rifle to group less than 2", if I do my part.

:D What kind of load are you using?  Goex FF or Pyrodex in what volume?  How about patch thickness and lube?

I'm working on a 54 cal GPR right now, and am fine-tuning a 50 cal. GPR at the range.  My results are getting close to yours, but not quite.  I'd be really interested in knowing, if you don't mind sharing.

Thanks!

I usually use Goex because of the price, but I have gotten my best accuracy using Swiss Ffg.  I use the pillow ticking that you can buy at Walmart for patching material.  It usually mics about .016 before washing.  I use Stumpkiller's Moose Milk for lube.

lostid has a pretty good point.

toothpick, there are several very good books out there on shooting black powder rifles of any iteration.  Sam Fadala's books are mostly good if you don't mind seeing the same pictures and often times much of the same text in several different books.  Anyway, many of the books will give you a good overall understanding of black powder rifles in general.  They'll cover twist rates and what type of projectiles different twists are designed to handle, which you seem to be very interested in.  There will be ballistic tables for various projectiles covering velocity and energy from the muzzle to at least 100 yards.  Powder charges, calibers, rifle styles, lock styles and their good and bad points.  I believe you'd find such a book interesting reading and would glean much information from it.  I'd recommend you get one!  I sure enjoy them even after reading them for over 30 years.

Also, as lostid said, there are the archives on this site and a couple other good sites.

Toothpick,
My Pedersoli 54 will put 5 in one hole at 50 yards like the lymans.  I feel the Pedersoli are copies of the origionals, while the Lyman is sort of an almost copy. No offense to anyone.

harryo,
I had a Lyman that accurate.  I used 70 Grs of 3f Goex, moose milk and a standard  pillow ticking patch.  But I used the red pillow ticking instead of the blue pillow ticking as I felt it gave me about a 1/4" better group.

lostid,
Whats a archive?   Some sorta magazine?  Or is it that new billboard down by 5th and Main...........by the Piggley Wiggley?  You know, the one that tells ya how fast your going.  If so. I'll read it.

crow_feather, an archive is how Noah took the bees through the Great Flood. How did you ever get to be a Moderator without knowing stuff like this?

fadaldas shows loads for the thompson center .54 renegade in his book..  it shows loads from 60 gr 2fg to 120  2fg  minumum and max.. velocities are  1260-1748 respectively..   ill bet you will  get load info with the rifle.. pedersoli usually gives  safe practical loads for their guns..  be carefull not to double ball or double load your new gun, and try not to shoot the ramrod by leaving it in...  check every load depth by measureing the ramrod protrusion on the hand, that is i count the number of fingers the ramrod stick out of the barrel to make sure im not double loading some component of the proceedure.. if the load looks wrong, pull it, not shoot it out.. a steel ramrod, with t handle end and ball puller screw is normal range equipment for beginners and sage shooters alike...  good luck dave..

now yer gettin it toothpick :-D  I like how he's learning fast to get his point across,,,,ty toot'.
AND! Good choice,,,,the .54!!
the rule of thumb is 1.5 tymes the bore diameter, for you thats 81 grains, :D ,using a good hot fast 2f! Clean bore conditions and a reliable primer! (most guy's don't get the part about the powder and primer.)

It's gonna take 200 shot's to break in your new rifles bore.!(period). so buy some ball,,buy some powder

AND FOR GOODNESS SAKES!! CLEAN ALL OF THE PACKING GREASE OUT BEFORE YOU SHOOT IT!
DON'T SHOOT A GUN TILL A CLEAN PATCH COMES OUT CLEAN!!

You might also try 70 grs of 3f and prb.  I always found it to be an exceptional load for the 54.
