I would look up loads for the 45-70 for that powder or from that company's own data. or use a powder that IS listed for the 45-70.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Bernie, the powder equivilency charts aren't exact or meant for interchanging data for powders that are showing as equal. I have seen it stated that Hodgdon buys powder from ADI, but without knowing that for a fact, I wouldn't interchange data unless ADI states that it is ok to do so. Looking at the ADI data, they don't show the AR2207 being used with any bullet larger than 400gr even in the Ruger #1 level 3 load data, so I wouldn't recommend using it. But, FWIW, I've shot Ruger loads in my BC, so it may be safe to do so if done slowly working up from levergun start load levels....but beware....the recoil is fearsome!!! If you want to use the ADI powder due to availability, I would choose one of those powders that has data in both levergun and Ruger load levels and start low and work up to a point where you attain your accuracy/performance level....or hit your pain threshold  .....whichever comes first!!!

The Hodgdon annual shows the heaviest bullet for the Ruger loads as the 400gr JFP with a load of 48-53gr of H4198. They don't show the 500gr bullet at all with any load for the 45-70, just the 45-120. They do show a 485gr Lead bullet in the trapdoor loads using 28-32gr of H4198. I would be more inclined to use that data before using the 45-120 data. I would definately contact ADI and make sure that H4198 is a direct replacement for AR2207 before I worked with that data.

thanks guys. tim i youse 35 grns of ar 2205  which the same as h4227 with now signs of pressure.2207 is slower burning than 2205 so if i started at 35 grns of 2207 and work up checking fore signs of pressure.

Bernie, be careful, pressure signs in the 45-70 aren't as obvious as in high pressure calibers. Your first indicator will more than likely be the barrel release will be hard to press when you want to eject the spent case. A stuck case will be the next sign, but with the straight case of the 45-70, I don't know if that will happen, I know it does with bottleneck cases. Also check the inside of the empty brass by bending a piece of wire with a tiny "L" in the end, place that inside the case, all the way to the bottom, press the tip of the wire against the inside if the case and drag it up the inside of the case wall, feeling for any sign of a case head separation. I would check every case if you are working with max pressures. The external sign would be a bright ring around the base of the cartridge within about 1/8" of the rim.

be safe,

Tim
