It's real easy, loose all the .44 stuff and stick with the 45-70!!!! :-D :-D  :-D  Works for me!!!  No offense meant to the .44 shooters. 8)

Yey your prob right just start with the 44 & move on if i want at a later date. Just a 44mag seems so plain :)  that should work someone up
If they made a 45 colt not45/410 but a dedicated 45colt there would be no need for the 44 mag in my case anyhow

one hole'

it seems to me that some of us haven't studied the ballistic results available with some of the .44 mag' loads.    if j.d. jones has gotten nearly 1400 fps' with a 320 gr' hard-cast lead bullet out of a 7 1/2" revolver safely, then i think the .44 is misunderstood by those who play down its abilities.

i'd get some good jacketed or gas-checked hard-cast bullets for your barrel and load them as .44 mag's --- keeping in mind that today's manuals understate the design parameters of the .44 mag'.    it was originally designed for a maximum product average chamber pressure of 43,500 cup.   (the .357 mag' was designed for 46,000 cup originally!).   if you get some 'weight-forward' bullets, like j.d.jones and randy garrett have produced (and others), you'll have more of the bullets weight moved into the nose of the projectile outside of the brass case.  this leaves you more room in the cartridge for powder....and the ballistics are greatly improved with the heavier bullets.

i'd start with 240 gr' hornady xtp's or 270 gr' speer gold dots and see what you get.    then try a cast bullet with a gas check like i described above and get ready for even more velocity......    and, tell us how well you've done with it all, please.

good luck,

ss'

My rifle will do 1636 fps with 300 gr. XTP's in 44 mag.and the 445 will do 1977 fps with the same bullet. My Speer maunel shows a load for a 300 gr.bullet doing 2200 fps. in the 444. With the 445 you can still shoot 44 mag and 44 sp. . I like my 445 because you can let the smaller people shoot the 44 mag,and when they grow more let them shoot the 445.  Hope this helps. Digger

Ditch,
Thats kind of what I had in mind but I get 2150 with a 330 cast out of my 18 in marlin just curious what the diff would be but I will prob keep it as a 44 mag & ream in in due time to a 445
Do you need different dies for the 445 or will the 44mags work I havent bought any yet so if 445 dies are needed I will get them. They can load 44spl, 44mag & 445 right??

Thanks for the info digger

One Hole; The 44 mag dies work on all of them except the 444. The reamer is easy to use and in 2 to 3 minutes and lots of cutting oil ,you have a 445 supermag. You don't even have to remove the ejector for this. Digger

ONE HOLE 45-70,
are you interested in buying a reamer or just renting one?i was going to head a 445sm reamer deal but i havnt went with it yet.i was going to buy a reamer then rent it out to forum members like leftoverdj did with his 357max reamer.i have a 14 inch 44mag  contender barrel that i want to rechamber to either 445sm or 444 marlin.i kind of had my mind made up on the 445sm but now i am thinking more in the lines of the 444 for this barrel.the 445sm can be done right at home but the 444 should be done by a smith.im still thinking about this my self and will go one way or the other very soon.

there seems to be interest in the 445sm rechamber here and i think it will pay for the reamer in no time.if you want to head a reamer deal for barrel rechambers that would be fine with me.you can put me down as the first on the list.let me know what you think about the chamber reamer.i think with a $15.00 or $20.00 rental fee plus return shipping the guys will go with it.

One Hole I rented mine from reamerentals.com,but there's lots of people that are interested in buying one and passing it around. I use the 240 Rem bullet( its the same as loaded in factory 444) and with a near max. load of 296 it goes over 2100 fps. It's quite a potent cartridge.  Digger

OneHole, Have you tried the 44 Mag as is? Not sure how to say this well, but it strikes me that you seem uninterested in the 44 and may have prejudged what it is and how it performs.

You are right, the 45 Colt and 44 Mag are essentially ballistic twins, but the 44 is an altogether different animal from a rifle barrel. I'm with Mac, get some dies (you'll need them if you do the 445 SM anyway) and play with the 44 as is for a while. It just may show you a few things you forgot you knew.

I plan on shooting the 44 mag as is but will ream it as well in time bigger is better   & you can still shoot 44 mag & special if ya want so why not have the best of all worlds :-D

I think we shoul go ahead & look into the reamer I havee no idea of cost or what else is needed

Jeff223 pm me with some details & maybe we can contact those who would like to get in on it. Seems some things fall apart after they get started on forums so lets see if we can get some commitment priceng of a complete package etc. I really don't know where to look into it I was just thinking of renting
