Does other mean "I won't hunt with either, so I'll stay home?"

Nope, it means "I won't be dictated by the views of bunch of smug conservatives completely lacking in imagination and will instead choose another equally capable cartridge if for no other reason but to rub their noses in it!"  :-D  :-D    :D

the 7 mag is a very capable, flat shooting tack driver that is a perfect all around cartridge for everything in north america not named grizz. There are a few others that can do the same job but come with the kick of a mule and are not much fun to whack gophers with all afternoon. The -06 is no slouch but the 7 gives me the extra reach i love here in MT.

I voted for the 7 Mag. I own both but the 7 mag has a little more power in some of the rounds it can fire. Where as the 30/06 can shoot the 130 gr bullet at 3200 fps then it goes to the 150 gr bullet at about 3000 fps and the 7 Mag is the same so far but here is where it takes over. The 7 Mag can shoot a 160 gr bullet at 3000 and the 30/06 can shoot the 165 gr bullet at 2800 fps. The 30/06 can shoot the 220 gr bullet at 2500 fps and the 180 gr bullet at 2700 fps. The 7 Mag shoots the 175 gr bullet at 2800 fps. :D

I like the whole family of 06 cartridges! - 25-06 thru 35 Whelen but my favorite is 270 Winchester.

30-06 for the reasons I put in the other thead and also because I have a soft spot for those things (and the people) who have kept this country free.  Even if you wouldn't dare hunt with an '06, you just gotta love what it did for us in WWI, WWII, and Korea.  It is THE All-American cartridge.

30-06!!  I'd even go so far as to say that IMHO, the 30-06 with the 180 gr. Nosler Partition is suitable of any big game, short of those VERY big and nastys.  Those extra 2-4" at 400 yds won't make a good shot out of a poor one, and a good shot can do it with either cartridge.  Plus, I think those bullet weights of 200 & 220 grains could be a real advantage in certain circumstances.

Given the 3 choices here..I would take a 30-06 over a 7mag...any day..because of several reasons including cost..availability of various ammo and reloading components...but ...there are cartridges I would take over the 30-06 as well...depending on what I wanted to hunt...if I want to go larger...my 338-06 will take on just about anything I would choose to go after...if smaller...I can choose all the way down to a 22 Hornet...but I won't choose just 1 to do it all...cause...that's absolutly no fun for a Handi-holic :-D

Its never easy to get people to awnser a simple question,if you had to choose between the two the only reason i can think off tha people would go with the -06 is less recoil, the ammo is just as avaliable and slightly more exspensive, well worth the extra range and energy you can get out of the 7MAG  :D  :?  :D

I voted 30-06.  But I want to change my vote to "other".  I would take the tweener .280   In my mind the best of both worlds.

A 7mm Mag with 160g bullets has served me well for over 20 years, prairie dogs to elk.  Why change?

(Got a .300 Win Mag last Christmas, why not?)
