Looking to buy a Handi
« on: May 18, 2005, 11:22:12 AM »
I've been lurking here for a while, reading up on Handi rifles, and I have decided to buy one. I have a few questions, however. I want a .44 Magnum, since I already load and cast bullets for it. I cannot find one locally in the general Athens area, but I can order through a dealer.
First: Do all the new Handis and barrels come with Williams sights? I like the old patridge blade "pistol sight" setup better. Can they be fit to the new Handis?
Second: Is the barrel flyer sale still available for new purchases?
Third: I'd like to add a 45/70 barrel, but want longer than 22". Do the Buffalo Classics come drilled and tapped for scope mounts? Is it included in the acessory barrel sale?
Fourth: Anyone happen to see a .44 Magnum for sale near Atlanta?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Crow-
I like your choice of 44-Rem Mag for a handi.  I think it is a very good deer, hog caliber for common ranges.  Big hole, low recoil ( in a rifle) lots of ammo and components and great performance.  You can call H&R at 1-978-630-8220 and ask for a sale flyer, but that is not a guarantee.  It was set up for previous owners who submitted warranty/registration cards.  It sounds like you have been looking at the H&R site, but if not here is the link http://www.hr1871.com/barrelAcc/index.htm for the barrel accessory page.  I don't see a lot of 44 Rem rifles on the shelves around here, but hopefully it becomes more common in your area.  You could always buy the 45-70 first and then return it for the 44 barrel.  45-70 comes in 22" and 32", both available as an accessory barrel.  There should be others around to answer your other questions.  Hang around, this is a very good board.  BuzzKill[/url]

Hey, I live here in Augusta, and I know where you can find a 44 handi. At least it was there a few weeks ago when I was in the shop. The name of the place is Bain's Army Surplus in Augusta, and the number is 706 796-1397. I think the price was right around $230. He had a 45/70 too.

Welcome aboard, Crowkiller!! :D

The latest crop of 44mags come with a Williams WGOS ramp barrel sight as seen on MtJerry's thread on his 44 mag. The BC 45-70 barrel is drilled and tapped for the scope rail and has a dovetail for the front sight, if you order it as an accessory barrel, it comes without rail and front sight. Walmart doesn't list the 44mag for some reason, but it is in stock at their supplier, but they do list the 45-70 for $200/$215, both with wood and synthetic stock.

I have a 44 Mag handi with the synthetic stock. I love this rifle. I just got a 357 Mag barrel as well. The 44 Mag is a real good shooter.
shot placement is everything.

I finally found a .44 Magnum Handi, with the older Patridge blade sights, used at a local store. I had given up, but walked in and found it hidden with the shotguns.
It is a keeper. I cleaned the barrel really well, mounted a 3-9X40 scope, then loaded up some Lee 310 grain round nose flat point gas checked bullets over a max load of H110. Under a inch and a half at 100 yards for 5 shots. Since the bore slugged over .430, I used the bullets unsized as they dropped from the mold, I gas checked them by running them upside down into a sizer until the check crimped on.
I am very happy with this rifle, accurate and now very cheap to shoot. It will make a nice companion for my .44 revolver this fall in the woods.

Glad to hear you finally found what you wanted. I got a 44 mag barrel from a fellow member last summer and love it. It's definately one i will never get rid of. It had the sights you where talking about on it but i took them off and put a red dot on it. It was all i used during last deer and hog season.
