handi 3030-very used, help a rookie with price?
« on: September 10, 2005, 10:16:48 AM »
well..gotta do my first post sometime...

been intrigued with these rifles for sometime..seems a fellow could almost get two for one compared to some of the bolt action rifles out there...

was looking at a Savage 270 when this very used looking Handi caught my eye...has iron sights but also a scope base.  metal could be in better condition, but it's all finish, cosmetic and without pits or rust.  bore and chamber look fine, trigger was really sweet.  30-30 caliber. Ugly ugly wood, but hey..something about an ugly gun u know:)

The shop wanted $150 out the door, compared to the Savage 110 for $350..well...kind of see why this rookie is looking (i already shoot a .243 Weatherby, so caliber is not a big deal)  Too high? h e also has a sweet looking .243 with Simmons scope for only $229.  how much do barrels run and do i have to send in the receiver?

my south blind doesn't have more than a 80 yard shot in any direction, since it watches a clearing and trail from a bedding area, and I thought this might be a nice short range deer/hog set up with some new wood and refinish the metal.

Welcome to GBO!! :D  Barrels available are listed at the H&R web site, add $15 fitting and $10 shipping to the barrel cost. You do need to send the frame in for fitting, you can also upgrade the stock to synthetic or laminated, but keep the existing stock to send in for barrel fitting, they can be rough on stocks as some of us know when doing the fitting. They won't fit a barrel to any old pre '87 H&R products and will only fit the asterisk marked barrel to frames built '99 or later.

Read the sticky's and FAQ, lots of info in there for ya.

$150 is about right for a used Handi, a new one sells for $200 or so at Walmart, for comparison. The .243 may be a little high if the scope is a low end Simmons, which is a common give away scope.

hey thanks for the response. I didn't think of Walmart, and checking via their site, I might as well pay another $50 plus tax and get a late model receiver.

I also noticed I could get a 20 gauge Ultra H&R slugger for $187.  that might work pretty good for that narrow spot i'm hunting.

Then i saw the flutted .223 for $276 or so, the .308 Survivor...omg...figure $345 for a bargain basement Savage...$499 for a Vanguard...$419 for an ADL...well the money difference starts adding up very quick doesn't it?!

thanks for the help, I think i'll go the 20 gauge slugger or 3030 route and find a nice 4x glass for it...

thanks very much, glad I found the site!

can feel it...going tomorrow to order my first...

either the Ultra or Survivor in .308

i'm going to "Choate' it anyway, so I may save 30 bucks and just get the survivor and order the nice stock and keep the survivor for fitting a .223 flutted at the factory when available

thanks for the help in catching the disease!
