Rock Island Armory?

Just out of curiosity...

I have heard many diffrent opinions about this, are the Rock Island Armory 1911's made with "lesser" materials than a Springfield GI?

I have heard they don't wear as well because the material is a low quality metal.

What is myth and what is fact?
I love shotguns! :cb2:

Since no one else has chimed in, I'll just throw out what little info I know . Can't speak to the material question, but the gunsmith at my local shop has nothing bad to say about them. Reliable out of the box and parts are interchangable with other 1911's. He specializes in 1911's and I have known him since high school and spend a lot of money at his shop. I don't think he would give me wrong information. I have a couple of mil spec. Springfields, but wouldn't hesitate to buy a RI if I was in the market. He doesn't like the double stack. Grip safety problem.

They are cast, not forged, just like Rugers. They are strong, accurate, reliable guns, great right out of the box, no extra bells and whistles, IMHO, the best money you can spend on a 1911 till you go handmade.
Most of the guys that knock them are repeating hearsay, or selling something else.
You can spend 3 times the money and not get a better gun.
Yes, I like mine. No, I'm not selling them.

Got a GI today. I like the fit and finish, especially for the money. I put a single box of Remington hardball through it. No issues. It's just a start, of course. So far, I like the gun a lot. We'll see how she does 500 round from now.

I heard the S.A.M. , Rock Iland and the Charles Daly are made on the same frames.  I want another 45 acp and the first one of the three i see i'm buying it.  I haven't heard anything bad yet about any of them.  I think the dealers who bad mouth a gun because they don't have one to sell us suck.  One of my dealers told me that star bm 9mm were bad too he said they were junk too.  We must not let these small amount of bad dealers discourage us from getting what we want.   There are other dealers to deal with our cash is good anywhere.   About the bad dealer he sure lost out on my gun business.                                                 BigBill

i own 1 RIA fullsize, 1 RIA compact and an Armscor Fullsize.

I have put over 1000 rounds through the RIA fullsize not a hiccup, shoots better than i do. the hammer bite is famous on this model, i installed a kings ss beaver tail grip safety and solved the hammer bite.

Bought 2 RIA compacts one for me one for dad. I had nothing but trouble with one of the compacts. i sent both back. they repaired and sent back to me. one shot great over 500 rounds through it and not a hiccup. the other compact displayed same problem. i sent it back, they offered repair or replace. i chose to have it replaced. { from what i have gathered all manufactures have problems with compacts.}

I had it replaced with an Armscor Full size. i have only fired it 25 times no hiccups. it is currently listed for sale on gun broker as my dad purchased a colt and i do not need 3, 1911's and i have 25souper being built and i need the money to fund that project.

i have found the fit and finish on all to be as good as any of the higher dollar models i have looked at and better than some. Their customer service is outstanding they bent over backwards to make me happy.

i do not shoot that well with a pistol but when i take my time it puts bullets where i am. they have all shot various factory and handloads mixed in the magizine, and i use the  $8.00 armscor magizines in all of them.

for a basic no frills gun these are the best buy for the money.

Just for the record, S.A.M.(Shooters Arms Manufactuers) and Rock Island are two differant companies. SAM is in the southern Phillipene Islands and Rock Island is in the north. I have owned a S.A.M. and it was a decent pistol. The R.I pistols I have handled are of a higher quality and everything I have read says the same. The Charles Daly pistols are made by Rock Island.
