T/C Encore vs. Savage 12BVSS
« on: August 03, 2005, 07:00:21 PM »
I was looking at both of these guns for a groundhog/target rifle.  I saw things that I liked about both of them.  I was wondering if the accuracy of the Encore could stand up to that of the Savage.  If it can then the only downfall of the Encore I can see is that it is a single shot.  Let me know your opinions of a comparison of these rifles.  Thanks.

I have 6.5 x 55 and 7mm08 barrels for my encore.  I don't have a Savage but do have Remington, Tikka, Kimber, Swedish Mauser, and Swiss bolt guns.  The Encore is not as accurate as the other rifles.  The 7mm08 is a heavy stainless barrel from the TC custom shop.  I have used washers under the forearm, crowned the barrel, swapped stocks and scopes but the best I can do with either barrel is about 1 inch.  And I have tried all sorts of bullets and powders in my reloads as well as several types of factory ammo.  I don't think it has any effect on accuracy but my Encore hits the primer off center - more so than any other rifle I have. I would recommend the Savage even  though I don't have one. I will probably keep the Encore because of the ML barrel which shoots about 2.5 inches but is a dream to clean. I looked at one of the Savage pkg guns in .243, with the accutrigger today. It is $419 at the Bass Pro in Memphis.  I'm not easy but I can be temped.  Good luck,
james

Just curious, why would a single shot be less desirable for targets or varmints?

No need to reload fast when varmint hunting, unless you run into a rabid vampire chipmunk.  :D

The Encore is a great gun. I have one in 22-250, it is very accurate.

I have mine in the 50 cal ML and a 204, love them both.  The 204 will now hit primers at 100 yards.  Not every time mind you, but close damn enough.  I think the Encore is a very impressive piece of iron.  And its easier to tell the wife that I'm going to just buy a barrel instead of the whole gun.  Even though the glass costs 2x the barrel.
