Lube Problems
« on: August 20, 2005, 07:24:44 AM »
I'm shooting PP bullets in my 45/70 Rolling block. I'm shooting 10 shot strings using a lube that consists of 50% bees wax, 40% crisco, and 10% olive oil. The grease cookie is 1/8" thick. Everything works up to shot no# 7 or 8 then the bullets go everywhere. The first six were in an 1 1/2" group today and again after that it's all over the place again. I'm using blow tube and cleaning the throat with a swab so the patch want get wet and come apart.

From the best I can tell, the foulings are getting hard in the throat , which is in my opinion, a lube failure. I've got my patches down pat, now If I could just get the lube right. Anybody got any Ideas?

You might try a “name brand” lube from a proven source, to see if it really is the lube, but most likely it is.  Early in my lubahaulic phase, my lubes would burn to a hard crust in the throat after a few shots, less on a hot day.  I thought it was the lard or the Crisco in combination with the bees wax, I evenly worked around using those type of fats, which improved my lubes.
