Price check for a new guy
« on: August 04, 2005, 06:03:59 PM »
Please help me and let me know if this is normal, OK or a good price.  A shop has a very nice used blued 223 with a nice laminate stock and a cheap scope (what ever cheap stuff came as a package) for $200.  I think it is a sporter weight barrel. I want a 308 for deer hunting but thought it might be fun to also have a 223 barrel for small stuff hunting.  So I would send it off for a 308 barrel and have both.  What I want to know is how does this price sound?  I don’t like the cheap scopes so it is not worth any thing to me.  So is 200 ok for this rifle?

Welcome aboard!! If it's a 24" bull barreled Ultra, yes it's a fair price, if it's the standard pallet wood laminated, it's a little high, you can get the resin laminated Ultra from Walmart new for $243 and the standard Handi 22" for $200.

The top pic is a cinnamon resin laminate, the bottom pic is a standard pallet wood laminate. If the rifle you're looking at has a standard contour 22" barrel, it's more than likely a Handirifle. But, the Ultra is also made with that barrel, just different stock, and someone could have swapped em, too.

Sounds like a fair price, depending on the barrel you want.  Most prefer the 24" bull barrel to the lighter 22" standard contour or sporter barrel, but that's a personal preference, not essential. Unless the scope is a good one, I wouldn't even consider its value in the bargain, as Marv said, most of the time, those scopes are entry level and not of much value.

That's a mannlicher forend, they were available from H&R for $35 shipped earlier this year, it wouldn't hurt to call or email them and see if they have any left. If you call, it would be wise to ask for Jennifer, she's very knowledgeable and most likely to know if they are still available...
