OK guys.....the new stock for the .204 that you gave me is finished.

I took some pics, and here they are:

The original OEM Handi Rifle in .204 Ruger:




The original stock was actually one of the prettier stocks that I've seen on a Handi.  It had some tiger stripping in the grain, and I was kind of struggling with weather or not I wanted to replace it.  But I did.

I started with fitting the stock to the reciever.  There was approximately 1/8" of excess wood around the area where the wrist sits against the reciever.  I sanded this down with 60 grit sandpaper until it almost fit flush.  Then I hit it with 100 grit until I had all of the scratches and machining marks out of the wood.  I did the same with the forearm stock.  I had to fit it to the plastic pivot piece that screws to the end of it.  When I had the scratches out, I started "raising the grain".  I wet the wood, dried it quickly with a hair drier, then sanded the "fuzzies" down with 220 grit.  I probably did this ten or so times, until there were no more fuzzies when I dried it.  

After this was complete, I started the staining process using Tung Oil Finish.  I probably put around fifteen coats of TOF on, rubbing with 0000 Steel Wool between coats.  When the pores were pretty much filled with Tung Oil, I started applying a product that I got from Gunstocks Inc called Linspeed.  As far as I can tell, it's just a fast drying Boild Linseed Oil.  I think I put three coats of this on, mostley just because I kept ending up with a bunch of crap in my finish.  Still have some, but I'm calling it good :grin:








I'd like to thank everyone for giving me the gun.  I can't wait to wring it out on a prairie dog town.  

I did do a trigger job on it.  Didn't require any stoning, just polished the peices, and didn't touch the hammer sear/trigger interface.  The trigger is sitting at 2 lbs four ounces now and breaks like a glass rod.  Once the Linspeed has had a little more time to cure, I'm going to get it out and do some shooting.

Thanks to Graybeard too for bringing the door prizes.  The stock is beautiful.

Looks good Wes. Hope it shoots a sgood as it looks. Keep us posted. You gonna load some for it too? Seems to be the ticket on these in a Handi. Brass is kinda high I think. Mitchell's proved it's worth it tho huh?

I see ya got Dan all hooked up too. Very good......a new convert. It was inevitable tho. Take care and enjoy that Handi!

Good looker  you got there Wes. Get it tuned up real good,so Marv,Greybeard,Granpa Mike,and I can give you some real shooting lessons. Who knows? In 15 or20 yrs you may can shoot as well as us. :-D  :-D  :-D Digger

Well, that's what I'm hoping for Digger :-D  

Now I'm looking at buying a laminate stock from Gunstocks, Inc for my daughters 7MM08 Rem Handi.

Wes, that is one good looking rifle.  

Is that your step-by-step finishing process?  Or does Gunstocks, INC provide a recommended process?  I have not started mine yet.  I won the Camo Laminated stockset, but am thinking of buying the Grey and Black laminated from them too.

Mike,

I had Ed from Gunstocks Inc email me his step-by-step process.  That's what is detailed above.

I have gone on and added a few steps of my own though.

After the last coat of Linspeed oil, I wet sanded the stock with 2000 grit sandpaper.  I thought I could live with the stuff in the finish, but I couldn't.  I'm still trying to decide weather or not to hit it with another coat of Linspeed, or just put another coat of Tung Oil finish on it.  

If you get a Walnut stock and go with the Tung Oil (Or Birchwood Casy's Tru Oil), make sure you put the first coat on VERY thick, and let it set for at least 24 hours so that it will soak up as much as it can.  

I'm convinced that the most important step of the whole process is raising the grain.  Make sure that you do this step as many times as you have to in order to get the grain as smooth as possible.  If you don't, you'll have a fuzzy stock next time it rains.  

Ask Ed what he thinks you should do with that Laminate stock.  You can call him or email him and he'll respond pretty quickly.  

I'm not going to post his email on here because I don't want to cause him to start getting a bunch of spam :grin: , but if you look on the paper that came with the stock, his number and his email are both on it.  

If you don't have it, call me and I'll give them to you.

And you better post pics of that stock when you finish it :lol:

That'd be because Hunt101 decided I didn't need any of my pictures anymore.

Wes I just could not stand it any longer, Couple weeks ago I bought
 a 204, Then yesterday I rec a ultra 24 in Bull barrel 223 Rem.
 I give you all a race on the Pd's. in 06.
 To hot and dry here to do any shooting. Marv.

Mitchell, I really haven't.  I'm still waiting on my dies to come in.

I have shot the 32 and the 40 grain Hornady loads through it though.  Mostly at prairie dogs.  I did shoot a group on paper with the 40 grain load.  The first bullet hit about three inches away from the last four.  The last four made right at a 1" group.  

I think I'm going to bed the forearm on this rifle when I do Dans' rifle and see how that works.
