Need help,7-30 Waters aficionados
« on: August 18, 2005, 11:44:54 AM »
Hello,Just got a Contender barrel in 7-30 Waters and 100 pcs 30/30 Win brass, over the years I have firefourmed commercial brass for a coupel Ackley improved rounds and 375 HH brass to 375 Weatherby useing a small charge of bullseye then filled with Cream of Wheat and topped with a plug of wax.                                                                                     From what I have read brass life for this cartarge is short,4 or 5 loads ?    Has anyone used this method to firefourm brass for the 7-30 ?                 Any other hints reloading this round would be much appericated.              Thanks                                                                                                David

davidsan,

I anneal the case necks of the 30-30 brass.  I then size them in a 7-30 Waters die just enough to allow them to chamber and the T/C close.  The brass will actually have two shoulders.  I then use a minimum load of whatever powder/bullet combo that I plan on shooting.  Much of the time, this load will actually be fairly accurate.  When I first started messing with the Waters over 20 years ago, I tried the fast burning powder method.  Didn’t like it and went to the method I just described.  Since I cast bullets, I use a 7mm cast bullet to do the fire forming.  And, one of my most accurate loads is with the cast bullet (287346 @ 135 grains).  I rarely shoot jacketed bullets in anything anymore.  Finally, I just looked at a couple of boxes of 7-30 reloads—cast bullet of course—and one box has been reloaded 15 times and the other has been reloaded 18 times.  The 30-30 case is most easy to reload and very durable from my experience.  Good-luck…BCB

Yeah I've done it that way and with Kleenex also. Never liked either method tho as it seldom gave complete forming on first try. The Kleenex actually worked best.

I gave up and just used a bullet and starting powder charge. Cast bullets are ideal if you cast. If not they might cost as much as jacketed.

I neck sized only and got very long case life. Whoever is telling you 4-5 loadings is doing something wrong.
