Reloader 19 in 35 Whelen?
« on: August 29, 2005, 10:59:43 AM »
I see Alliant touts their Reloader 19 as an excellent powder for the .30-06 and it's daughters.  But I can't find anything for the .35 Whelen.  They offer data for Reloader 15, and I've even found data for Reloader 12 in the .35 Whelen.

Reloader 19 and Reloader 22 appear to really shine with the heavy-for-caliber in the '06.  I would think they would be the cat's meow in the Whelen or even the .338-06.

Does anyone know of any published loads with for Reloader 19 or 22 in .35 Whelen?  Does anyone have experience with this powder/caliber comination?

Didn't know the '06 had any daughters.    Knew it had a bunch of off spring but thought they were all sons.    Reckon some folks just have to attach the feminie gender to every thing. I accept it for boats since it's common useage but refuse to in guns or ammo. Dang it all my guns are male no females in the crowd, not even my petite little .410 SxS. He's a boy.  :-D

The Reloader series powders are about as good as it gets in the '06 cased rounds. Same for the .308 cased rounds.

The Whelen's large bore to case capacity relationship, or high expansion ratio, would indicate that powders somewhat faster than RL19 would be more suited, hence the data for RL12 and RL15.

Blackhawk,

Thanks, that at least makes some sense.  I might be able to tell myself that Reloader 15 would actually work better than the slower powders.  But in actuality I think the main reason loads are not listed by Alliant is because it costs Alliant money to develop the loads.  I suspect they just slapped up a few token Whelen loads then quit.

But the Whelen has some pretty heavy bullets available, some as heavy as 280 grains.  I would think stepping down a notch from RL-15 would be a saavy choice.

I just know there's a good number of Whelen fans out there and thought maybe someone else has found something for RL-19 or 22.

Graybeard, I'll remember this if I ever see you admit that you "fondle" or "caress" your guns.

Ergo, my guns are female. :-D
