Dropped the forearm again!
« on: August 06, 2005, 01:08:39 PM »
Yes,  I've been working towards getting my Sp. mule ear finished.  Flex honed the chambers (it does make a difference) and was cleaning everything up and getting ready to put all the pieces back together....

I reached for the forearm and dropped in on the driveway!  The hard, concrete driveway.  Put a bunch of small dimples in it from the impact so I'm back to staining (just the sanded spot where it hit) and Tru-Oiling it, again.

This will be the third time I've worked on it.  And I'm getting rather tired of it!  Need to be more careful on this repair.

CR,
Thank you.  I thought I was the only klutz who managed to drop, or bang into something, every stock upon refinishing!

Nope, you're not alone.  I've done three coats of Tru-oil since the drop because I keep finding "dry" spots.  I'm hoping today's coat is the final one (till something else happens

I gave up on trying to keep my guns looking good. It was too time consuming.
The only showpiece I have now is a seldom shot Browning BDM.

I noticed just last week that my rifle looks pretty bad on the barrel from the guncart and the stock from throwing it down on gritty tables, haybales and what all. My blued pistols have the blue worn off from holsters on the cylinders and sight. My regular shotgun is a real mess. I broke the stock at the wrist and had to glue it together and pin it for strength. I covered the near the whole stock with deerskin and added some tacks. uhggggg.

To make myself feel better about my regular CAS shooters, I call it patina and that helps.

I always appreciate a good looking set of firearms when I observe them at the loading/unloading tables though. I am glad some folks take pride in a good looking firearm.

I figure I want to start out with a nice looking one and time will take its toll on it.  At least it was good looking at one point.

I've got a Coyote Cap Mod 99 mule ear that is getting its stock thinned as my next project.  More like a 2x8 than a stock.

Figure this one was my "practice" for the '99.

Well. I finally got the mule ear all back together, no left-over parts, and she works.

I'll use her during this month's matcch to see how I like SxS vs. my Win 97.  Always gotta be trying something new.
