Patching paper question

Hi,


Has anyone tried to use the various recipt paper that comes on the rather convienient rolls that seem to become rather deeply discounted specials when no one else buys them???

Some have coatings for thermal heads and others are just plain paper.

I have not tried that paper.  Generally speaking, paper is darn cheap - even if you buy it at full-price. 

The pad of 25% cotton tracing vellum I bought at Staples currently lists at $6.89 for a pad of 50 sheets.  I can wrap probably 18 bullets per sheet.  That comes out to $0.008 per bullet.

I think most paper patchers are concerned with the quality of the paper and the availability than the price.

For now, Staples carries my vellum on the shelves.  It's there when I need it.  And it works well. 

This receipt paper you speak of.  How thick is it?  Does it have a cotton content?  If it's thin, durable, and available it would be worth a try.

Hi,

For $2.00 I purchased a pack of 2 rolls 2 1/4" X 150' of NCR calculator paper. The paper is .003" thick and patches out to .384 on a .372 bare bullet.  It is rather weak when wet and must be handled very carefully.  If it warms up I will let you know how it shoots.

If I angle the cut carefully I get the proper length to wrap twice and no trimming. Patch width is about 1 inch with just enough to tuck into the slightly hollow base of my home made swaged bullet.   (If I ever get the camera working I will try to send up a pic) This gives me about 3000 patches for about 2 bucks if this works..........

  So how do they shoot? I've tried the teflon taoe and USUALLY stick with "rag" paper because Grandpa showed me how. Lately the carpal tunnel and arthritis bother me too much too paper patch.Are you patching grease groove bullets or smoothsided" patching bullets"?

Uggh.  Sorry to hear about that.  Maybe you need to get a really big bore - that might make patching easier handling something over 1" diameter

All the more reason to really sing the praises of paper patching.  The more people doing it the more tempting it will be for Lee, Lyman, RCBS, or Foster to make a patch rolling tool.  Hmm, some sort of collet on a case trimmer that grabs the nose of the bullet; then rubber bearings that contac the bullet and roll. The paper would roll around between the bearings and the bullet (much the same way paper rolls around a typewriter carriage).

Load the strip of paper in, turn two times, twist at base, release collet, lock in the next bullet and go.

Get your self a cigarette rolling machine like they used for rolling your own.
It's a little gadget my Mother used years ago. It has two rollers with a light cloth belt lay in the bullet and feed the paper in and roll it up.
Lick the tag end if you wish to hold it together.
They might still be making them.

Hi,

Found a new paper that may have some promise.

Home Depot in the paint section General purpose masking paper 9" x 60yd @ $2.00


Real good wet strength and adhears nicely to the bullet. I should have some results this weekend.
