Could not pass it up!
« on: August 19, 2005, 05:07:08 PM »
I travel alot around south Louisiana and hit the pawn and gun shop in the out of the way places, Looking ya know.  Have gotten the Milsurp bug not long ago when I picked up a pristine Yugo sks and then am waiting for a Swiss K31 in the mail off of the Gunbroker site.
Well I had heard about and seen the Hornaday 17hmr but until recently did not know there was a 17mach2.  I had stopped in St. Francisville at a local gunshop and the youngman and I talk how darn hot it was and the upcoming cool weather and hunting season.  He showed me the mach2 and I was amazed that it even existed.

Fast fwd to now, 2 months later.  As most know when you win an auction on GB you got to figure an additional 45 to 50 bucks for shipping and transfer fees unless you are a FFL dealer, i am not.  So I passing time doing a search for the 17m2 equipment in my area and low and behold my local FFL shop had a Sportster 17m2 at a starting price of 99bucks with only 2 days left.  Needless to say I am a proud owner of the aforementioned for an out the door price of 107.
All of the local dealer want 150 to 170, including his store tag of 159.00.

What a deal!!!  And now with all your good info, guess I am gonna have to make room for this on and prob at least one more.

I am Happy!!!

Welcome aboard!!! I think you'll find that the $150-$170 is way more than the average, they sell for $130 here, $110 on sale pretty regularly. Check the NEF/H&R Centerfire forum for many tips to get the most from the Sportster, it has a lot in common with it's centerfire kin.

Thanks ya'll for the welcome!!
Yeah should have guessed how inflated the prices can be down here, still I am happy to find that I got a good price!  I mainly was attracted to the handi wanting to try out that cartridge.  I mean any other offering in a bolt gun has seemed to be quite pricey.

Hey Quick, My brother lives in Gig Harbor and shoots alot out there, IPSC and all, hunting too.  I lived in Portland until Dec 2000 and really want to get back up in the PNW, I just loved it there.

I now have the mounts and scope to find, that should be fun.  Please give me a lead on the mounts, do then need to be High, Med, or reg. consider that 40 mm will prob be max OD.

One other question, should I really need to dismantle and wash out this new rifle as suggested in one of the threads?

Not all of em are that dirty inside, but too many are. I have 16 frames and 24 barrels, most of the new ones have some machine chips and crud in em. Remove the stock if you intend on using a solvent in the frame, some solvent wills ruin the synthetic stock. A good bore and chamber polish won't hurt a bit, it will eject better and shoot more accurate sooner with less range time. Be sure to check out the stickys in the Centerfire forum for help.

My 17M2 Sportster is topped with high Burris Signature Zee rings and a Simmons 4.5-14x40 ATV scope. Mediums will more than likely work too, depending on the position and size of the power ring/ocular bell. Most of my Handis/Ultras are mounted with medium Burris Sig Zees.

Yup, I love it here too!! Born and raised here, only time I was away was compliments of the US Army when I visited Virgina, Georgia and Viet Nam!! Was glad to get home!!!
