Strange Remington pump, help!
« on: January 04, 2004, 05:00:17 PM »
I have a friend that has purchased a Remington 12 gauge pump-shotgun.  He told me what he'd bought and I figured it was just an 870, but I went over and looked at it and I was stumped!  It's definitely a pump, but it looks like it's built with the John Browning design.  It bottom ejects, bottom loads, and it's not an old shotgun like the model 29 or model 10.  It doesn't have a model number on it anywhere, I looked for a long time, although I didn't take it apart.  It's in excellent condition, has a bigger forend like a modern pump, it's not a corn-cob forend.  No choke tubes, and no case length designation.  If you have anything that could help, please let me know.

Can't be the 31, the 31 is a side ejecting pump, this one is bottom ejecting and bottom loading.

Yeah you're right. Didn't have my books with me at the time and didn't clearly recall. Never owned a 31 and only seen a few a long time ago. The only old Remington pumps I'm aware of are the 10, 17, 29 and 31. The 17 is supposed to be a 20 ga. only so shouldn't be that. What does it look like other than being a bottom feeder? Does it look like the other old bottom feeders?

No it doesn't look like any of the other bottom feeders.  When he first showed it to me across the room I said, "that's not a Remington, that's a Browning BPS, cause that's what it looks like"  Like I said, I'm stumped.  It has Remington stamped on it, but I'll have to look at it again, it may have been stamped on the barrel, but I'm sure it was on the receiver.  I'll see if I can get a digital pic of it up next time I'm over there.

Does it have patent dates stamped on it? The predecessor to the Model 10 had no model number, was just stamped "Remington Arms Company" and patent dates February 3rd, 1903 and May 18th, 1905.
On the 19th of April, 1775, a tyrannical government sent an army to disarm its citizens. They ran into a touch of trouble.

I'm not sure about the patent dates, I'll look next time I go over.
Thanks for the tip.

Hi,
This could be early pump, made on same style patent that Ithaca has used since Remington dropped or sold it. (You've got be old to have seen & worked on these critters.)

If you really want to, do it.

"Hi, Greybeard.
Little known fact, from 1940 (ser #229,000), thru 1951 (ser #346,000) all A-5's were made by Remington for Browning. Known as American made Browning, St Louis Mo. on barrell. FN started production in 1952 with ser #346,001. Browning plant was bombed in WW II, to cause this to be done."

Grizer just updated another thread. Thought that this could be helpful.
