375 Whelen Improved
« on: December 30, 2003, 02:42:43 PM »
I know I saw someone on here that was making one or had one. I have just sent off my VZ-24 to get rebarreled in 375/06 Improved. It was already done tricked out in 35 Whelen, but since I already have a 35, a 375 seemed logical. Any load info, etc greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Steelhead,

I think you have a real winner there going to the 375/06 WI!  I have recently purchased a VZ-24 for my this year's project rifle.   You are several steps ahead of me so if you don't mind I have a few questions: 1) who's doing your barrel work? and 2) where did you get 375/06 WI dies?

Steelhead,

Here's a link to Steve's pages showing a load using a 270 grain bullet over IMR-4064.

Sounds like a fun pair.  Of course, now you'll just HAVE to make a 338-06 for them to play with.
I would suggest the light to medium weights for this chamber. Like 210-250g-ers.  Should be able to get close to 2600 with a 250g from a 24" bbl.
What twist are you using? Who's "improved?" What barrel length?
Might be fun to try some cast bullets in this one also.

Do a google search for Z-hat. He does a 375-06 imp, think it's one of his Hawk line of wildcats. Oh yeah, Fred Zeglin. That's the fellow. From what I hear he does good work.

What your talking about sounds like the .375 Hawk. Try www.z-hat.com. I have a .411 Hawk that he built, -o6 case blowded out and necked out to .411. It`s on an Ruger M-77 action and is a great shooter. It only has .009 of shoulder to head space on though and I reall think that the .375 Hawk would be eaiser to load for. I bought mine used from him, and am well pleased with it.

Fred does awesome work and he'll help you design your case if the .375 Hawk is not just what you were looking for. I've worked very closely with for almost two years now and he's a great source of information and easy to talk with.

I've used a 375/06IMP for sometime. I rebarreled an Old Model 70 because of the cone breech, it feeds very well. Mausers have a little trouble feeding cartridges with sharp shoulders. For a lead bullet load try 60 grains of H380 and a 270 grain bullet. I'm using SAKO #378 sized to .377 with Hornady gas checks. I have some data for 270 grain Spire Point bullets some where. I'll have to look around, also, for 235 grain bullets.
