475 GNR
« on: July 29, 2006, 04:20:21 PM »
I am working on a deal that may get me a 16" 475 GNR encore barrel nearest as I can tell it is the same as a 475 jdj.
anyone know anything about this barrel? I only know it takes a 45-70 case and blows it straight and uses a 475 caliber bullet.

J.D.'s 475 JDJ is the same and I believe the first of the 2.  I have seen in his Handgunhunting column years ago the it got 1550 with a 500 gr Barnes copper jacketed lead core bullet from a 14 inch Contender.  I don't doubt it as the 45/70 SSK barrel will get 1400 with a 500 gr Hornady FMJ (steel jacketed ones) .
What an Encore will get is even more but I don't know how much.  Maybe 100 fps more I would give a SWAG on.
Reeder likes bullets in the mid 400 gr weight range.  Kinda low for that bore size to me as why would one get a bore that large and use what is a flyweight bullet in it.
If you can wade through the porno and ignorant junk on Reeder's site forum he can be helpful.  Just remember not to mention J.D.'s name or question his knowledge or give him a reason to believe you are and you will be alright as he thinks he is the only one in the world and his henchmen will give you a good thrashing trying to protect the "chosen one".
Oh yes,  don't use the word" maximum" either as he soundly thrashed some that have used it then later used it himself in giving some loads to a guy concerning the 475 Linebaught.

I have a .475 JDJ, like it a lot. I have only shot the Hornady 325 and 400 bullet, have a 17 inch Encore barrel, getting about 1750-1800 with the 400.
For gods sake don't mention a JDJ caliber, everybody goes nuts. Yes, JDJ did the .475 first.
