If the local Bi-Mart still has them in stock.
I can pick between the 17HMR and the Mach2. I am leaning towards the HMR but it will be a gametime decision on which one to get. I plan on getting 22LR, and 22mag barrels down the road so it doesn't much matter which one I get today.
I have the old 3-9x40 Trascho scope that sat on my Tupperware Special for 10 years so I'll be ready to go.

It has been eons since I had a rimfire. How do you guys clean a bore that small? Do they make cleaning rods that small in diameter?

Do the bores need hand lapping like my BC?

Anything else I need to know?

Since I work swing-shift, it will be easy to sneak this past the 'Imperial Red-Headed Scorpio". Buy it before work, sneak it in after work.

I have had all the rimfires in H&R rifles. The 17's are my favorite.

My M2 Is by far the most accurate rimfire I have ever fires...bar none! NO BS 3/8" groups from a rest at 100 yrds! My 17HMR is very good as well at around 5/8" - 3/4", if I keep up my end.
The 22LR is hovering at, to just under one inch. I sold my 22mag Ultra. It would shoot FMJ's under one inch but nothing else! I put the plastic stocks that came on my M2 on it and the laminated wood on the 17 and kissed it good bye!
I have been a 22mag fan for many years, is a great cartrige, but not one that is super accurate as the 17's are.

I think you will be very happy with either 17 cal rifle you choose,

I love the 17 HMR. The last time I was out shooting I took my 17 HMR and my Ruger 22. I have one of those metal swinging targets I was going to shoot at with my 22. It was actually made for the 22.

My son-in-law and I were back at the 100 yard line and were shooting our 17 HMR's when we thought why not just shoot at the metal 22 target. Surely back at 100 yards it would be fine.

We shot it twice and that was it. The 17 HMR packs a heck of a wallop at 100 yards. The swinging metal targets are I think around 1/4 inch thick metal and there was two nice small cavities about 1/16th -1/8th inch deep in the metal.

Outta curiosity can the 17 stock be swapped with an Ultra laminate stock and vise versa to the Ultra?

Bought the 17 HMR. $129.99 out the door. I am in the process of cleaning out the creepin' crud that NEF/H&R puts on the metal. Have to mount the scope, boresight and do the O-ring trick and some sanding to free-float the forearm/barrel like I did on the BC and my M99 Savage. Hope to get to the gravel pits Sunday AM to sight it in.
I think I'll have a mini competition between the 17HMR and my 270 Tupperware Special. Should be interesting.

I predict lots of dead golf balls.

To answer your question...YES. With one caviot.

There are different "drops" in the stocks from different vintages. I have moved stockes from 30 year old H&R's to brandy new ones and vica versa. No problem. Some have screws while others have bolts. But all are thru stock fastened.

I have a set of nicely figured old walnut from a early M 158 that now lives on my 357 maxi. It has a bit too much drop for scope use but not aweful. I think I will be moving it to my sidekick as it is open sites. I will likely order a set of ultra wood for the Maxi.

yep u will enjoy the 17 HMR i just posted below how iam getting impressed more everytime i use it, they hit hard and shoot stright, plus ammo is still down under 8bucks a box so it dont hurt the wallet as bad as 12 an 15 when they first came out, plenty of choices too now in brand ,plus theres a 20 gr bullet out now
