I picked one of these up used the other day. I already own a Marlin in 35 Remington and thought a 30-30 would be a good gun for my son to practice with also.  

 I bought 3 boxes of ammo for it, 150 gr Rem/170 gr Rem/and 150 gr Winchesters.  I had problems with both boxes of the 150's not firing. I'd get a couple shells from each box that they wouldn't fire.  I ejected the shells and the primer was dented.  I had 2 shells that wouldn't go at first but after 3 or 4 tries they finally went.  I didn't have a bit of problems with the 170's. All of them in the box shot fine.  

 I'm thinking the problem is the shells themselves since the 170 all went off without a problem. What's your take?

 I fitted the gun with a slip on Sims Limbsaver recoil pad and a 3 x 9 x 40  Simmons scope. The gun shot ALOT better than I was expecting. I was putting 2 shots touching at 100yds and the 3rd shot within an inch of the first 2.  My son shot it with no problems and hit a bullseye at 65 yds with it. That was the farthest he wanted to shoot it.

It sounds like the ammo all right.  If the primer was dented well, the rifle was doing its part.  If the dent was shallow, you might want to take the bolt apart and thoroughly clean it to get any grease, etc. out.  Brake cleaner works great for this.  Then lightly oil  everything and put her together again.  Remember that the oild can gum up with time, so be sparing with it.

 After talking with a few buddies they said basically the samething.  The primer was well dented, I just think I got some bad ammo.  I would have been MORE comcerned if all 3 boxes had problems.  I'm going to Bass Pro this weekend and will pick some up there and make sure.
