Should I have bought the H&R Ultra Comp 30-06?

I am kinda new to guns, but I had been looking for a deer rifle and was in this pawn shop here in NE and ended up buying an H&R Ultra Comp 30-06 (break action, single shot). I paid $279 and it was used but in excellent condition.  I have read that H&R makes a good single shot rifle, but does anyone have any experience with this particular model? Thanks!

You're gonna get quite a few responses on this one......I just bought a 270 UC and love it. I'm just looking for a scope now. I don't think $280 was a bad price. That won't be your last one. Just make sure you follow the cleaning & lapping directions at the top of the page.

You got a great rifle there...and even though you paid more than some have for one...it is well worth it..I strongly suggest you give it a extensive sleaning...and hand lap the bore before going out and shooting it...please refere to the FAQ's at the top of the forum here for details that have been posted about it...

I'm going on my second 30-06 Ultra-Comp...I sold my first to Quickdtoo and he's more than happy with it...and I'm on my second 270 Ultra-Comp...

When you find the right ammo for it...you will be well pleased...just as I have been...mine shoots the new Federal Fusion extreamly well...have a look...

Welcome aboard!!! I have the 30-06 Ultracomp, a .270 Ultracomp and an extra 30-06 Ultracomp barrel. They shoot real well as Mac can attest to, the one I bought from him also shoots the 200gr Nosler partitions real well, too.

Hello, Mudvayne.  

I happened upon one of those about four months ago.  So far It seems to like everything I've put through it.  Rem. & Win 180 SP and some cheapo 180 gr. SP that I picked up from Dunhams.  Most of my groups are three shot groups at 100 yds and consistantly measure 1"-1 1/2".   Some guys are getting smaller groups.  

Due to the porting, mine is noticably louder, but there also seems to be less recoil than in my Handi '06.  Neither are abusive.  I have a Bushnell Sportsman 4X12 with the adjustable objective lens mounted with Leupold Rifleman rings.

Even if you paid a little more for it, it is well worth it. And later down the road if you started looking for one you have no need to kick yourself in the butt now for missing out on one. The UltraComps are excellent,  I as well as every one else here, am in total love with mine. In fact I plan on going out today with it once the heat breaks a little. Give us a follow up once you take it out, and see how she performs. I know you will have fun with it.

Sounds like a made the right choice even though I might have paid too much.    It's a beautiful gun and fits me very well.l. I can't wait to go shoot it!  I read the info about cleaning the barrel but i found it kind of confusing. This is my first rifle (I also have a benelli nova pump and CVA .45 cal ml) . Like I said, I'm kinda new to guns. Does anyone know where i can get more info on cleaning the barrel? I don't want to ruin my gun before I get to shoot it. I don't even know what lapping means!  Thanks..........

Brad, read the sticky "Cleaning and hand lapping our Handis"....it has everything you need to know. Lapping is just a quicker and less expensive way of breaking the bore in with less shooting and cleaning which is the other way to break in a bore. After hand lapping the bore, great accuracy can be achieved as soon as immediately to as much as 40-100 rounds. If just shooting and cleaning, you can expect to shoot upwards of 200 rounds before the bore settles down to consistent accuracy. The last 2 bores that I hand lapped, I got zero copper fouling out of after 40 rounds down range, and accuracy was excellent.

Congrats and welcome. Even if you paid a little more  thats ok and don't feel bad.The Ultras are fine rifles and your first one is always more special. Clean it good,read the stickys and facts. Please let us know how it shoots and come back often. Good luck.

No rain there David!!! That's not an Ultracomp!!! The Ultracomp is no longer made......

Keep in mind that the Ultra Comp has a ported barrel.  It may also be a bull barrel.  Mine appears to be, when compared to my Ultra .223 bull bbl, but I've not seen any official designation to this.

Also, does anyone know if the Ultra Comp was available through Wal Mart?

I paid $269.00 for mine at a local shop.  It was new, but had been in the shop for a long while.
