Howa Bedding Project.
« on: February 07, 2005, 02:34:56 PM »
I have a Howa 1500 308win with the Butler Creek synthetic stock. I have fully floated the barrel via opening up the sides and forefront of the stock. After this I still haven't noticed much improvement in groups and still get the 3rd shot flying after letting the barrel cool for several mins. however, the first two are usually consistent. I am wondering if I could bed this stock with the Acraglass bedding kit and if so how would one go about it. Would it be best to fully bed the action and barrel or just the action out to where the contour changes on the barrel (#2 contour barrel).

Generally speaking bedding the rear action tang and the front receiver ring , along with about 2 inches or so of the barrel is all that's required. With the synthetic stock I'd bed a bit more of the barrel, perhaps 3 inches or so.  Bedding nearly anything else would not help much of anything.  Be certain the action is not warped before applying the bedding.  It should pass the screw test and show no motion as the action screws are alternately tightened and loosened. I am not overly impressed with Butler Creek stocks.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to bed a thermoplastic stock. Nothing you do to it is going to make it very stable, and the bond between any bedding product and the stock is just not going to be very strong. I just did a Howa using Score High's new Howa pillars and am really pleased with it, but it is in the wood Boyd's stock. If you really want that Howa to shoot I'd recommend buying a proper stock for it, either one of the Boyd's ones or one of the new McMillans. Something that can be properly bedded and isn't going to keep moving on you.

The stock is not the best but if the fit between the stock and recoil lug is improved and the rear tang properly bedded it should do better.  It is impossible to put pressure on the forearm with one of these and a tight sling is not a good idea.  The biggest problem is the bond between stock and bedding.  It will never be as solid as wood but done properly it will hold just fine.

If you want to try a bedding project get a laminated stock.  They're warm to the touch and as stabil as plastic, while being quieter.  Good luck!

I know this is an old thread, but where can I find those "Score High's new Howa pillars"?

Go to www.probed2000.com or www.scorehi.com (it's the same site.) You can order them direct from him.
