44 Mag or 500 S&W?
« on: August 15, 2005, 08:38:14 PM »
OK, if this Ohio reg is as posted, then I want to get a barrel to do it with.  Don't think (think) I want the 357, would prefer 44 or larger.

Should I wait a couple months to get a 44 or order a 500 now, assuming THEY are in stock?

Been looking at ammo prices and using that factor a lone the 44 wins, but the 500 is much more powerful, like a low end 45-70, but a legal pistol round.

Go for the 44 mag...find a used barrel or rifle and ream it out to 445 Super Mag...it will be a-lot more versitale than the 500S&W...all around.Used barrels and rifles can be had...as long as you stay off e-bay on buying them :) ....the pistol barells are ok...and should work ok...but..if were me...and I was planning on  hunting in Ohio...I would just go and buy a 12ga Ultra Slug Hunter and be done with it...for those who own them and have shot them...can attest to their accuracy and the range at which they can hunt with them...and with the new Sabots coming out...make them a real 200 yard deer gun...and until they allow centerfire rifle cartridges will be about the best you can do...this is just my way of thinking...

Read my update on using firearms in Ohio.  Looks like a no go so far.
Good feedback on the 44 and I had thought of that but was thinking 500 IF I could use it there, cause it might have a better chance of availability.

Was looking around at the components for the 500 and there seems to be a lot of stuff coming available.  Plus it could be loaded down a notch or two I suppose.

Handi:

If your going to down load anything..." What's the point"...I mean...I see the point of wanting a pistol barrel...and I see the point of wanting to use it to deer hunt...but...the name of the game is hunting...and if your going to handicap yourself with a downloaded version of anything...that really doesn't make any sense to me..do the math and the comparisons and you'll see what I mean......2 offerings from NEF will keep you legal and you don't have to worry about what some mis-imformed state worker can do...these 2...drop deer in their tracks...and let you reach out to 150-200 yards with out a problem and are extreamly accurate...these are the Ultra Slug Hunters...20ga...and 12ga...respectfully...if you want a large projectile...look very carefully at these 2...none...and I repeat...none of the pistol cartridges will offer you more of a killing advantage on deer...than either of these 2...and none of them will work as well as what a 20ga...or 12 ga..has already proven  themselves to...and as far as accuracy...I've never had a slug gun shoot as accurate as what my 12ga..USH shot...it shot as well as what  my 45-70 does...all I'm saying is...don't over look either one of them...they are the best thing going for a Shotgun only state...or what ever pistol rounds they will allow in a Handi...

So in that case why not get a 44Mag-cheaper to shoot and lots of fun- and an Ultra Slug Hunter-heavy hitting boom stick?
And leave the 500 behind...Just my opinion.

My point wasn't that I would down load and hunt with it but I COULD and plink with it.  For hunting it would not be relegated to Ohio deer, as it would be a good close range Elk/bear round too.  On the other hand it could be loaded well beyond the 44 Mag or 445 I do believe.

Why not just load up the 45-70 instead of spending all that money for a 405?  Cause you wanted too

As for the slug barrel, they were my first thought but I wanted to follow up on this first lead, but it looks like that has fallen through anyway.

The 500 still looks interesting to me.

Quick
Are those available in 12 or 20ga, the add doesn't say?  At least I didn't see it.

Only available in 12ga so far and Midway doesn't even have those, yet....I would be more interested in the 20ga if they ever become available, if it were me.

Handi, I would go with the 44mag. I got mine in a trade and have not regretted it since. I simply love that little gun. If you get one i don't think you'll regret it either.

I'll admit the 500 S&W does look interesting but i don't think i'll be getting one any time soon. The 44mag. is just a great gun.

The nice thing about the 445 SM is that it is a three cartridge gun (44 Special, 44 Mag and 445 SM) The 500 is a 500, and I doubt it offers a lot over the 445 which gives bottom end 444 Marlin/45-70 performance amd still has plenty of offerings in bullet choices. I believe that wil always be a shortcoming of the 500 SW.  That is the really nice thing about this new reg (be it this year or next) it offers the chance to use pistol cartridges that perform like rifle cartridges. A tough choice to be sure.
