how about a range report on that 223 flute and your opinion on it (flutes deep enough , how does the stock fit etc).

i've been thinking about getting one as a dedicated p-dog rig but i can't make up my mind if i want it in 223 or 22-250. (yes you guys got me hooked the heck with a 5 day license next time i'm buying a annual)

Mitchell, Dan has a lot more trigger time on this rifle than me, but here are my observations:

The rifle is well made.  I don't know how deep the flutes are cut, but they seem to be cut clean, straight and do their intended job. The barrel doesn't seem to stay hot quite as long as the one on my unfluted Ultra 223.

The stock is comfortable, and points very well.  'Course, I'm used to shooting military type rifles with a pistol grip, so it's real comfortable to me.  Dan has more experience with the traditional type rifle, but even he likes the way this rifle feels.

The gun shoots great.  There have been some outstanding shots made on prairie dogs and jacks.  When you get it in a "field type" shooting scenario, the rifle shines.  But, from the bench, it seems a little inconsistant (it will shoot a great group, then a mediocre group, but it really never shoots a bad group unless you feed it something it doesn't like).  We are working on some things to try to make it shoot a little more consistant from the bags (Even if a rifle works like a laser beam on game, it's still nice to have those bug holes on paper to show off and brag about :wink: )

I have done a trigger job on the rifle, and lapped the bore.  The next thing I'm going to do is to bed the fore end with acraglas.  I'm hoping that this will solidify the "honeycombed" forearm and tighten things up a bit.

I'll let Dan expand on the loads that he has tried and which ones the gun likes.

Mitchell, when I first got this gun I fell in love with it.  I shot probably five hundred rounds of Winchester White box 45 grain hp's in the first month I had it.  It liked those White Box bullets real well.  Wes loaded some 50 grain Sierra Blitzkings for it, and it seemed like the first fifty shot real well on paper and on game, they were flattening primers pretty good though.  We backed the load off a little and they didn't seem to shoot quite as good.  At that point, I went to Texas hunting coyotes and bought a 17HMR Marlin like Diggers.  Well, once again I got carried away with my new toy.  We Rhino'd the stock, free floated the barrel and messed with the trigger.  I ended up spending a lot of time with that gun.  I did finally put it away, and get back to the Ultra Fluted.

We did try some Remington 55 grain SP's and they didn't shoot worth a darn.  Also tryed the local "Remanufactured" Rafter 7's (52 grain HP and the 55 gain V Max loads) and they both shot very good.  The V Max load shot better out of those two.

Just last night, my son and I went out and we ended up 7 for 7 on jacks.  The closest was 50 yards and the furthest was 300 yards (laser ranger finder verified).

Better practice up for next year cause Taylor has a callous on his thumb from shooting this rifle:-D  The good thing is, I haven't been able to shoot much cause he's costing me so much.

Going to put one on my 204 Fluted too!) anyway was getting clover leafs off the hood of my truck at 50 yards with 45 grain Winchester white box varmit. My 22-250 Bull Barrel with the Choate stock and forend was doing the same with a Burris FuuField II 3X9X40.

mitchell;

The 22-250 UVF is going rather well, I'm surprised at it's accuracy. Haven't found a factory load that shot very good yet, but the hand loads are showing some promise. I'm staying with 50 or 55 grainers, the 50's seem to shoot better. Hellacatcher came down the other weekend, and he shot it, he seemed real impressed, might even get him one.  :grin:
Strange thing was when I was breaking it in, the first three shots formed a nice little cloverleaf about a half inch. No scope adj. or anything. Just shot one time then cleaned the snot out of it. shot again, same cleaning, etc.
It's been so darn hot, I can't get the groups I want without waiting for long periods time.

My 22 250 fluted does not like anything so far, especially Win. Supreme 50 gr. silvertips.I shot 3 3shot groups today and the first group was a floated forend and bipod with sand bag under the butt and got 2 1/2" at 100. I then removed  the bipod and rested under the hinge, and got a 4" group. By then I was out of the Win. ammo and went with the 55 gr. Rem corlokts rested on the hinge again, and got 1 1/2" group. The barrel heated up very fast. The 204 barrel would barely get warm with 9 shots. I'll try some handloads and see what happens tomorrow.  Digger

:D Well looks like every body is gearing up for next years p dog hunt.
Dano try some Ultramax 50gr nosler balls tip amo from sportsman guide. shot very well in my 223 ultra. they back order it last year so i didn`t have any for the pdog hunt.  :(  then they sent me 50g hollow point`s havent tryed them yet. Been playing with the 204 and 22-250 put the tasco scope on the 22-250 got it shooting to point of aim. the 204 is a lazer. Digger mite leave the 2506 home next year. unless it likes the 75g loads.
