Why did I buy a 44 Mag?
« on: November 08, 2005, 04:33:43 PM »
Hello all,
Last week I was the high bidder on a Dan Wesson 744 on Gunbroker.
I sent the Money Order on Saturday, and It was delivered to the sellers FFL on Tuesday and I got the gun on friday.

Thank you rightone5@msn.com and Lakeview Pawn@The Colony, TX for getting the gun to me within the week.

Well I went to shoot my new toy and the barrel nut blew off.
It took me ten minutes to find it but, long story short, the threads on the nut and/or the front of the barrel are bunged a little, so I need a new nut and a wrench to put it on.

I checked with all the usual suspects on finding these items(Brownells,Numrich,CZ-USA/Dan Wesson Arms,Popperts,E-Bay) does anybody know of any place else to look? CZ-USA wants $40 plus shipping for the nut and wrench. :(

Happy shooting

It seems to me that my grandpa many years ago advised me to never buy anything sight unseen.  I'm supposing you bought this on E-Bay and that's the reason I never go there.

Dan wessons  are great revolvers but do require a little more skill than some gun owners want. The Barrell Nut needs to be checked now and then.. It can loosen up. The barrell to cylinder gap need to be checked as well. The interchangability of these guns means you need to give them a little more attentoin. I have had excelent luck on gun broker. remember they are just listing the gun. They are not a retailer.. contact the seller he might make it wright.. I would just buy the wrench and nut. I hope you can find the wrench. I have bought Dam wesson guns that would only shoot a cylinder and lock up.. The gap was set incorrectly.. The dan wesson is in a class by itself. Good luck. I hope you atleast got a good deal.

Sorry you got started on the wrong foot, The Dan Wesson Handguns are great shooters and will serve you well in the future, But Like Darrell said the very thing that makes them unique requires some tweeking as you go along. All the D-Ws i have had in the past were great shooters but had to have some Maintainence. You might just buy the wrench and extra nut and have you a heck of a good shooter. Don't give up on the dan wesson product  Good luck..........Joe..............

Thanks all for the input.
I wound up buying the barrel wrench and nut. I would have bought the wrench anyway with this new gun.

I can't give up on Dan Wesson products because I have too many DW revolvers to give up on. :-D
Back in the late 80's a friend sold his smith 586 w/4" and some goodies to keep it out of the hands of his step kids, and I sold it before I shot it.

But I've had a DW since their Pistol Packs came out in the late 70's, so that's all the double action that I have to compare is one DW with another.

But I shure didn't need this 44 mag. since I don't hunt anymore and It's more expensive to feed than my 357 mags. Oh well I'll still shoot it and have a blast doing so. :-D  :-D

Yes I got the wrench and a new barrel nut.

I was out shooting the other day with it and it seem to shoot farther than my 357 mag ever did.

So I put a camera close to where it landed.

I'm happy with how my revolver shoots, but I don't remember the load that I used, just that it was a 300gr. bullet toped with a generous load of LiL Gun.

Happy shooting

I have had a DW 744 for about 20 yrs. It has been sitting idle for 15 yrs. The cylinder locking bolt wasn’t working properly. I finally sent it in to be fixed in Dec. and just got it back a couple of weeks ago. Works fine now. Now has a 6” V barrel to replace the 8” VH barrel. In checking the barrel nut, my old barrel wrench broke, so I called up CZ and ordered another one. It is now working well, and is very accurate, but the internals are a bit crude looking compared to a S&W or Ruger.

Sometimes you just have to kiss a few frogs!

Seriously, if I received a gun that was defective/has shown abuse - back it'd go!

If there was going to be a hassle about that ... the seller would get rotton feedback!
