44 Mag Bear Protection Loads
« on: August 17, 2005, 08:17:03 AM »
My buddy is going up to Alaska to fish the rivers in Sept.
I know that there are better choices than the 44 Mag for grizzly bear protection, but, he just bought a S&W 629 Classic.  I have suggested Federal Core Bon hard cast bullets as a first choice and W-W 260 gr Nosler Partition Gold as a second choice.
What other recomendations would you suggest.

Regards,

I use 300 grain hard cast truncated bullets with more H-110 than is supposed to be in the case ( S&W 629).  I haven't had to use it yet but it sure cracks the wrist.

Your best bet is to bring bear smarts.  GO to the Alaska Dept. of F&G web page and look for bear information.  I am on a IMac today so can't post the URL for you. :(

The garret loads are hard to beat the 310gr load is safe in a 629.  I carry a 4" 629 almost daily with 300gr hard cast loads at max velosities.  The COre bon 305gr penetrator load is another one to look at but cost is pretty high.

Factory loads would have to be Federal 300 gr. Hard cast bullets.  :D

Guys,

Thank you for the feedback. I noticed I had a typo, I ment the Nosler 250 gr Partition. This is the bullet I use for deer hunting in my 629 classic but I feel you will need more bullet weight and penetration from a hard cast bullet for big bear.

For my buddy's sake, factory loads will be used. Where can these loads be found?

Thanks again for all your help.

Go to your local gun shop and have them order you some if they don't stock them. Or look at mid-way or Natchez shooters supply.  :D
