fur question
« on: August 21, 2005, 10:42:46 AM »
Do any of you sell your furs unskinned or know some one who does
because I plan to do that this season because I don't have much time to trap. But how do I go about selling and preserving the furs and do you get less money if you sell them unskinned
total for this year so far
3 grinners
2 coyotes
4 coons and
1 skunk

 so far

Selling fur on the carcass, will cost you at least half of what the fur is worth. There is as much or more money gained by putting up your fur,as there is in catching it.
Selling fur in the round(carcass) presents many limitations and restrictions. It will pay you more ,to catch less fur and put it up.
This is a very good topic, glad you brought it up.We will take some other peoples answers, before I get into it again.

My suggestion is for you to find someone to do it up for you or at least help to skin and freeze.  When you have the time you can do it later in the year.  This way you don't kiss half your money good-bye.

I think most here will agree to put up your own fur.  Selling in the round requires either a local/convient place to sell on a daily basis or an awufull lot of empty freezers when the season begins.

I also think its a major part of trapping.  The feeling i get when i go to the basement furshed and see yotes, cats, otters and coons hanging from the furhooks cant be described.  The sweet smell of drying beaver leaning against every open wall is just a big part of it.  Then the day comes to ship all the fur north and the shed is empty...and no matter how much $$ i plan to get i dont ever know if its worth getting rid of all the fur i had.

Put up your own fur...take pride in it...and get top $$!!
