request 280 reload data 160 grain on up
« on: August 18, 2005, 05:41:52 PM »
Hi guys,
I presently have 2 survivors, 223 and 308.
I also have a Ruger #1 in 280, which I only load Hornady 162 interlocks and they shoot wonderful out of the ruger.
I am planning to buy a Handi280 as a backup for my Ruger ( the wood on the Ruger #1 is beautiful)
I am using IMR 4350, 53.5gr w/162 bullets...no pressure problems at all.
I would appreciate your experiences with the Handi 280 and if you are reloading for 160gr bullets or heavier.
I really enjoy this group, very informative.
Thank you in advance....Bill

Bill
I'll be watching this one also, since I too, have a 280 on the way.

I was hoping to make the 160gr Nosler Accubond work, but I am gonna try the lighter stuff also.

Have you ever used the Winchester Supreme with the 140 Fail Safe?  This looks like it might give the best of both worlds.

HandiRifle,
No, I have not tried the Winchester Fail Safe.
I only reload  with the 162 Hornady bullet.
My present Ruger #1 is my long range rifle, 300 meters plus.
It is primarily for large Mule Deer/Elk rifle.
Here in Nebraska seldom is a Mule dder within 300 meters, always a long shot, thus the 162 bt gives better lasting traj. and energy past 300 meters.
I practice consistantly at our outdoor range (olympic meter range to 600 meters) and am very comfortable with the 280. I have taken 3 mulies past 300 meters and a nice 6 point elk at approx 250 meters...all the animals did not go more than 30 yards.
I know everyone likes all the new toys bullet mfg's bring out...however the old proven results the older bullets are sometimes hard to improve upon.
I guess it boils down to...if you have confidence in the componets you have been using and the results are proven....stay with what has worked for you in the past.
I guess I am curious if the Handi 280 will handle the same pressure/load I am using in my Ruger #1.
Naturally I will not start off with the same load I am using now for the Handi 280, but will build up till satisfactory vel/energy/accurracy result.
Thanks for the reply.

I went ot Midway and looked it up. Nice long profile.  Curious, what is the twist rate for the Ruger?  The NEF is 1 in 10.

What is your zero point and drop at 300 m with that load?  What is the MV for that load as well?[/img]

Handi rifle,
Sorry I do not know the twist rate on th Ruger #1 280, kindof embarrassed, I will look it up and reply to you tommorrow on the twist rate.

The MV is 2900, drop at 300 meters is 12".

I use a milldot scope and is zero at 100 meters...the holdover for example, at 300 meters is 1.2 mildots, @ 400 meters is 2 mildots.

Energy @2900fps @ 300 meters is approx 2019lbs.

Some say the recommende energy for Whitetail is around 1600lbs but I imagine everyone will argue that point till the cows come home.

Ok, before everyone asks...why a mildot scope...for me it simple and not complicatted as all my rifles have mildot scopes and that is what I am used to.

No issue on the scope, to each his own.  Like you said, it's what you get used to.  I like a plain old 4X for my 30-06.

With 180gr loads, it's dead on from 100-200 and just put the top of the bottom center duplex post at the place I want to hit at 300 and WHAMO!

I have always heard 1500lbs  for elk and 1000 for deer, but like you said, there are diff opinions.

Thanks for the info.

Then you've got a bigger problem as I've gotten three bounces today on you and am sure when I look tonight there will be more. Please uncheck the block to watch this and any other threads. Your ISP is not going to let you get e-mails from GBO apparently. More of the silly spam protection policies so many ISPs are going to now. Perhaps if you request them to add the GBO address as Earthlink users have to do. Dunno. But until then don't ask for e-mail notification.

Graybeard,
I gues I am stupid 'cause I do not understand what is going on.

I do not know how to notify my ISP to block/unblock email to me.

I am not a computer guru....I belong to a GPS forum and I am receiving email from that site.

Did I put in the wrong data when I registered?
If so, I am not sure as to how to correct.

When I posted this yesterday, I was not really expecting email responses to my post. I was just wnted to know if any was using 160plus in their 280's.

I really was not requesting load data.

Sorry for the problem I created.
