Just bought a Ruger Bearcat.
« on: August 20, 2005, 11:28:29 AM »
I just now returned from Bilson's in Turlock, CA where I "bought" (10 day waiting period) a Ruger .22 caliber Bearcat SA revolver.  This gun will be for the kids, especially the little ones.  I'll load it up with .22 shorts and let'm shoot until the barrel gives out!  Its a small framed gun that should fit their hands better than my .357 and .45 caliber guns.  Also, I'm hoping they'll be able to learn good shooting habits without flinching before moving up to the heavier stuff.  Probably should've gotten a pellet gun instead I guess but there's just something about a gun that goes "bang" instead of "piff"!!

Great little gun.  Got one last yr after wanting one for yrs.  There's just too much of a taste of nostalgia with that model.  Although small enough for those young hands, it's still plenty of fun for the older folks too.  I really enjoy shooting mine.
Good thought with the shorts.  Just be sure to get the residue in the cylinder out good to prevent problems with long and lng rifle cartridges.  you are indeed getting those tykes off to a good start.

The Bearcat is a fine little .22 revolver. I bought one close to ten years ago and I really like it. I have used it for plinking, as a kit-gun while big game hunting and as a companion while patroling the property or hiking. I even have taken squirrels with it. You and the kids are going to have fun with that Bearcat.

there a fine little gun. Ive got two of them for the grandkids and want and need two more cause ive got 4 grandsons now. One thing to keep in mind with them is if there for kids stay away from the old models. Loading all chambers without a transfer bar can be dangerous. Weve got a grown adult here that was killed with one that dropped. There so cute and small that people tend to allow kids that are to small to shoot without enough supervision. Only way my grandsons shoot them is if there sitting between my legs.

The little Bear Cat is a work of art, I carried one when i was trapping, You don't know you have it on you. Lloyd is right they can kill you as fast as the next gun can. You drop one of the older ones and it will strike just like a Rattle Snake. Safety First Always  ........Joe........

Dusty, Great gun! My first handgun...1961, I think.  Loved it.  You might want to try sub-sonic lr's vs the shorts.  Often get much better accuracy, a whole lot cheaper, and about the same velocity.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt   :-D

I've had my Bearcat for about six years. Great little gun. It's always in my pack when I go hunting. Seems to be kind of hard to find holsters for them. I ended up having an upholstery shop sew a line in a nylon Uncle Mikes holster made for a S&W K frame. The Bearcat fits in it perfectly and securely.

They are great handguns for adults, at least for old ones.  Yes, my grandsons to get to shoot it once in awhile.  Mine is old, ser. no. F8--, loading no problem just load 5.  Holster was always a problem, for a tag a long gun I like flap holsters.  Found a maker of them that made them for the Bearcat. A fellow in Tucson named Jim Keenan made me a very nice one.  Very comfortable to carry and goes everywhere in the field.  Try Aquilla SubSonic Snipers, it is the one with the 60gr. bullet.  Very accurate at 15 yds. with my old eyes, great load for squirrels.  I hope everyone enjoys thier Bearcat as much as I do.  Problem is my old Single Six doesn't get much use.

I've got two of those older Bearcats from the 60's: a regular Bearcat and a Super Bearcat.  One has a blued steel gripframe and the other has a gold anodized (to look like brass) gripframe.  I sent both back to Ruger to have the transfer bar safety system installed and got both of them back in about 6 to 8 weeks.  Both came back with no extra dings or nicks, and it looked like one had been cleaned thoroughly (it has been carried a LOT and had some crud in the action, I'm sure).  The trigger pulls were still good on both.  Ruger did a good job on them and I can recommend their transfer bar installation on the old model Bearcats.

Dusty, you may want to try some of the CCI CB Longs in yours.  They shoot pretty good in mine and are much easier to find than shorts in this part of the country.  Be sure you make those grandkids wear hearing protection.  Even with CB caps or shorts, any .22 revolver will be pretty loud.
