I am looking for a good starting place. I have a Rem. model 788 in 22-250. The bullets are lyman 225415 cast with lyman # 2 alloy, lubed with lee liquid allox. Powders I currently have are
XMR 4350
Varget
Reloader 19
Lil'Gun
unique
H4227
Longshot
Anyone have a good load using any of these or do I have to buy yet another powder? Thankyou in advance for your help. D.C. in CA.

I forget - what weight are those bullets? Most 22-250s have a 1:14 barrel and won't stabilize much over 50 grains. If they're compatable I'd start at about 5 gr. of Unique and work up in 1/2 grain increments. It's going to be hard to get any of the other powders to go slow enough to show good results in such a big case. BTW, I use 6.0 gr. of Green Dot in my .223 with very good accuracy.

Thank you Nobade for the reply. The unique starting point you suggested is exactly what I had done before posting the question. It is reassuring to have that second opinion before pulling the trigger blind.
As for the weight of the bullet, I have seen them advertised as 45g,50g,&55g. At my house using #2 alloy they weigh in at about 53.5g + or- 0.2g.
For weeks now I have been fighting the urge to buy a lb. of green dot. this is starting to look like a fight I am about to lose. thanks again. D.C.

The most accurate CB load in one of my .250/3000s (parent case for the .22-250) was with AA-5. Slightly slower than Unique and far better for metering, it gave almost unbelieveable accuracy and shot cleanly. I always tilted the muzzle up prior to shooting but I'm not certain this helped any. Velocities were in the 1200-1300 fps range.
