LOADING 30 CALIBER SABOT
« on: February 25, 2003, 04:47:31 PM »
I JUST BOUGHT SOME 30 CALIBER SABOTS TO LOAD IN MY 308. THEY CAME WITH SOME LOADING INFORMATION, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME MORE ON THIS BEFORE I START LOADING. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY DATA ON THIS OR CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHERE TO LOOK FOR THIS DATA. NOT MUCH CAME WITH THE SABOTS. I LIKE TO SEE MORE CHOICES OF ( POWDER, BULLETS, AND POWDER CHARGES.) I ALWAYS TRY TO KNOW AS MUCH AS I CAN BEFORE I START SOME THING LIKE THIS. THANKS!

Did you get the red ones or the gray ones?

The red ones suck. The ones I got have a recess at the bottom that keeps flat-base bullets from seating completly, leaving an air space and causes the sabot to explode.  The gray ones are better.  You will need to use a faster powder with the lighter bullets, and keep your bullet selection to the shortest possible.  You want as much of the bullet as possible down inside of the bullet, if you have along nose sticking out unsupported as it goes through your bore, most of your bullets will be going sideways at 20 feet. The best results I have had were with short little barrel shaped bullets for 22 Jet.  Cant load them too fast though cause they will melt.  You might have the same problem with a .308.  You should be able to get velocities well beyoud 22-250 with a .308, I can get THAT much with a 30-30, but if they arent accurate they aint worth crap. Start with moderate velocity and work you way up to the most accurate load.  No matter what you do, you WILL NOT get the same accuracy as shooting a firearm with the intended caliber.  But then, If North Korea attacks, a close range bullet doing 4200 fps going sideways would probably diembowel a person if it hit them in the wrist.  If you got the red ones you will find little broken peices, if they are gray, you will find perfectly intact fully opened 'flowers' on the ground.
