Need Advice on Mosin Nagant
« on: October 30, 2005, 03:45:01 PM »
I gave my adult son a Mosin Nagant for his birthday earlier this month. What a great shooting rifle!  My three questions are................

1. Where can I get a synthetic stock for this gun? (It's wet here in the Pacific Northwest).

2. What is the best way to mount a scope on this gun?

3. Best Hunting Ammo? I found Norma 180gr SP rounds but after tax they were almost $42.00 for 20 rounds!  Everyone I've discussed this gun with say the 180gr SP is a GREAT PERFORMING ROUND. Letting my fingers walk through the keyboard I found:

I ordered 4 boxes (80 rounds) of the last link for him to try. Same amont of money (including shipping) and 4 times the ammo.

dawei - let your fingers do the walking through the Shotgun News.  They regulary carry adds for synthetic stocks for the mil-surps like yours and conversion kits for the bolt to allow scope use.  As for amo - I found the Sellier and Bellot to shoot best in the M44 I played with and those were 200 grain loads we tested, maybe the 180s.  I think Federal Arms is also a good source of those stocks and bolt kits for the Mosins.  HTH.  Mikey.

There are scout scope mounts for the Mosins that do not require you to have a bent bolt.  Here is a pic of my M38.  You may or may not like the scout mounts, but they work well in my opinion.  Also a pic of my K31 with a scout mount from the same person I got my Mosin mount from.

hylander

Can you tell me how you mount the Interordanance Mount to the rifle?  I can't tell by looking at the pic.  The scope looks like it is mounted very high above the rifles bore.

That is the standard mount for the Mosin.  The Mosin has a split bridge reciever.  It was easier for the Russians to use a side mount to put a scope on a Mosin in this manner.  I also think? that it still allows for the use of stripper clips for loading.  The rifle pictured isn't too far removed from a WWII issue sniper rifle.  Pick up a copy of the movie "Enemy at the Gate"  Required viewing for all Mosin collectors. The sniper rifle used in the movie is a dead ringer for the real thing.

I have an ex-sniper.  You can see where the armorer plugged up the mounting holes and reapired the stock for conversion back to an infantry rifle.

Here is a link that shows how to convert a 91/30 to sniper configuration

I'm surprised that no one mentioned this ATI yet, but I guess I'll throw it in there:

I personally don't like the way ATI uses there bolt, but the stock will do.

myarmor: I really appreciate the link. The "Package Deal" with, stock, Scope Mount, Bolt & Tools is the way I will go!

Glad I could help dawei.
Like I said I really don't like the bolt job. Personally I would rather weld a longer bolt myself or better yet-if you don't have the tools for that- buy a nice polished one like hylander has for around $50 or so. It's not really that much, and looks so much nicer than the ATI version.
Just my 2 cents.

There is some russian made 7,62x54 barnaul ammo thats 203gr soft point I think SOG (southern ohio gun) has it for around $6 a box.  I think AIM Surplus has some russian made brown bear 203gr soft point also its cheaper at under $5 a box.  Its not bad stuff my Finnish M39 Mosin & Tokarev shoots accurate enough to hunt with it.

You can find then all over the net though, like on eBay and Guns America.
