Reloder 7 in 4570
« on: August 25, 2005, 12:57:33 PM »
Recently purchased TC in 4570 and the stuff needed to reload it. Bought Reloder 7 because it was the reccomended powder for the 4570.
Problem, can't find any reduced loads for 405 gr lead bullet.
Would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Re7 is a great powder, but not the best choice for reduced loads.
46 grs, with a cast 405 gr. bullet gives about 1650 fps. 36 grains with the same bullet will give you @ 1400 fps.
These loads will work in a TC. Not sure how reduced you want, but I load .45-70's in my guns with Unique, or Red Dot for reduced light loads.

Speer lists down to 28 grains of RL7 for 1169 fops - but that is with a 500 grain lead bullet.  Lyman goes down to 37 grains RL7 for 1534 fps with a 405-grain lead bullet.  Personally, I use BlueDot for reduced loads in all my .45-70s.

If you want some good reduced loads for that 45-70, IMR4198 is good for that. :D

5744 is the powder that has proved best for me for intermediate Springfield level (reduced) level  loads.  Lots of shooters in the long range matches use it too.  It is non-position-sensitive and very accurate with a wide range of bullet types and weights.

I can tell you 2 loads that are very accurate in a wide variety of 45-70's. Both are with 350 gr bullets. If you want reduced recoil, dropping to the 350 gr helps a lot. Here goes-- 1st load--350 gr cast bullet, 14 grs of Unique, dacron poly filler over powder, Federal std primer. 2nd load--350 gr cast bullet, 15 grs of SR 7625, creme of wheat filler, Federal std primer. I can't emphasize enough not to deviate in the slightest on this data should you decided to try it and do so at your own risk. I have fired many hundreds of these loads in a half dozen reproduction Sharps with the only side effect-- accuracy.

I too like 2400 powder for light loads in the 45/70. 24gr of 2400 with a 405gr cast bullet has long been a favorite of mine. The lyman cast bullet loading guide will give you this load.

You can ,according to the loading manual, use more powder but why? this load is accurate and easy to shoot. Regards, Byron
